Walked in later in the evening on a Thursday, the only obvious Americans out of a sushi bar filled with Japanese...this is when you know you've struck gold. We're immediately seated, at the bar of course. Art, executive chef, comes over to ask how we found out about this place. Not wanting to intimidate anyone by saying "rateclubs" and intimating we would review, we said friends. Art, executive chef, quickly greeted us, asked us how we found the place and got us started with a roll. He asked us what we liked "Tuna?Salmon?Yellowtail?" "Yes, all of that!" I interrupted. "Very good" as he quickly ordered something off to the line in Japanese. "You will lov dis, layer rice, layer crunchy, layer rice, layer crunchy, den all fawr fis on top with roe. Also you will like to try my special, salmon roe, is very good." "Sure!" we replied in unison, completing the first of much, too much, we ordered that evening. How right he was..."very good" didn't even begin to describe the freshness of fish and exquisiteness of texture that highlighted the roll. Salmon roe was easily accepted by my new palate and lightly marinated in soy sauce without being "over salty" as Art said. Service was attentive, almost overly so with 3 servers removing anything the minute we took a breath. Seemed like a few too many servers on for what they were hoping to be a busy night. No complaints though, they were all young, genuine, and very courteous. After perusing the menu, we ordered off the sushi menu: toro, eel, salmon, uni (urchin), yellowtail. Delicious, prepared with just a touch of wasabi on the rice. In addition, blue crab miso soup with an entire half crab to display its authentic "blueness". After all this, I went for desert. If you're up for interesting icecreams, you MUST try the black sesame seed mochi icecream (pronounced mo-chee not like a mocha as I believed). Some odd resemblance of chocolate but lighter and just as delectable inside a frozen rice cake gelatin made for an incredible, but light meal finisher. All in all, this place is amazing and I give major props to Art, who handed us his cards on the way out, sincerely thanked us, and parted ways laughing "Okay, see you tomorrow!". You must go, but be prepared, this is not Rusan's pricing. For a filling meal, be prepared to spend $20 or more for sushi that couldn't be any better than in Japan. At the very least, its the best we've got in the dirty south. From beginner sushi eaters to connoisseurs, any and all are welcomed because, as Art said, "In here, you are Japanese."

Heyyyy!!!!! I really liked this place. Bouncers super friendly....to me anyway.  Always nice to experience when out and about in a 'foreign' city. Caught Fred Everything at this well-decorated, clean spot.  Bartenders were friendly.  Good sized dancefloor in conjunction w/ the size of the lounge (never seemed empty or overcrowded). Smoking area could be a little better ventilated.  I know it's a smoking area, but still. Great place to start OR end your night.

Smoke is a solid NYC jazz club.  I can't really speak to the food, as I don't think I've ever had anything more than the french fries, which are tasty.  They have a good drink selection, the service has always been good, and the space is just right for some jazz. The music and overall feel of this place are what I come for.  It's small, but not tiny, and just has a great atmosphere for live jazz.  The hammond organ nights are great, as is the SYOTOS latin jazz band on Sunday nights.  They often get some organ greats like Dr. Lonnie Smith to play, and when they do the music is definitely incredible.  Overall, if you're looking for a casual night of jazz, you'll often find what you're looking for at Smoke.
