I love El Rio! i came on a Saturday night with some friends and had a great time. This bar is somewhat divey in its laid back, neighborhood vibe, but it's much more sophisticated than your stereotypical dive. The drinks, like a more divey place, remain good deals, and the mixed drinks are strong. (money saving hint: on Saturdays avoid the $10 cover by arriving before 9pm, and you'll be much happier.) This is a bar that has something for everyone. They have an amazing, huge patio and outdoor area with picnic-style tables where you can kick back and enjoy a quieter evening talking with friends. On Saturdays there's a live band in a separate room, which is the loudest room with tons of great dancing if you want to feel more like you're at a club than a bar. Finally there's the front room of the bar with the actual bar table, which has the most loungey and divey feel for those who want that. It's less noisy than the room with the band but noisier than outdoors. El Rio is easily accessible from 24th and Mission, making it a great place to meet up with people from all over the bay.

I like this place, I came here for a friends birthday party on a Thursday night, Im that non asian guy amongst a whole bunch of asian friends lol but this place was awesome. We packed 5 people in the elevator (which is damn near impossible) and 5 more met us afterwards. The place is great, good atmosphere, ample room to "lounge" with friends amongst the K-town area, as soon as you walk in you notice the hip electronic music and dim lighting, we were seated in the nice plushy red seats and they joined two tables for us. We bought 3 bottles that night, engaged in great conversation, did some shots, I lied and told the Korean girls I was adopted by a Korean family and that my last name was Park lol it worked! haha The girls who served us drinks and food were very attentive and cute, the light food we ordered was good (no complaints) and the Soju was also flowing nicely. Ive come here many times after as the atmosphere is great.

Do not come to this place for appetizers. Even at half-off during happy hour, do not be tempted. 1. Crab cakes - no discernible crab 2. Lump crab tostones - barely thawed crab on stale, inedible corn chips 3. Empanadas - I can barely bring myself to call them that - they were so hard no one at our table could cut into them 4. Chicken quesadillas - OK, but really, how hard is it to shred chicken, throw in some cheese, and grill a flour tortilla? And when did quesadillas become Cuban? And for a place that is supposedly Cuba-themed, why are the mojitos not on special during happy hour? Atmosphere is trendy, but it is definitely not a place to go if your intention is to have a good conversation with friends. They keep the overhead music far too loud to talk without yelling, even at 6pm, and it just gets louder as more people show up. For actual Cuban food, go to Habana on South Congress. Or better yet, go to Miami.
