Bottomline: Great drinks, a good crowd, fun DJ, and photoshoot-worthy decor. I had cousins in from the Bay Area last weekend, and I had already taken them to the sub-standard Standard for a sub-standard drink and a prom-dress wearing post-Anime Expo crowd. I wasn't quite sure where to take them after such a letdown, but, miraculously, my beautiful cousins were ready to go out before 10PM on Saturday night. I hadn't heard much about the Edison, which is odd, because I live in Downtown LA. I did hear that the line was ridiculous at all times of night, so I've steered clear of the Edison in favor of pub crawling along 7th. What was I waiting for?! The Edison welcomed us with open arms at 10:30PM, and we stayed until closing! I got 2 drinks, a Mistress Nouveaux and the strongest Mai Tai I've ever had for $13 each. WORTH IT, especially after I'd paid $14 for a watery gin and tonic at the Standard the night before. Fellas, beware. If you're trying to get the manliest drink on the menu (The Edison, with Bourbon), it comes in a femme martini glass.

Morimoto, what can I say? You're a dream. Seriously. I've been to Morimotos twice, treating friends for birthdays, (the ultimate sacrifice, I know) and each time has been fantastic...for many reasons. For starters, as soon as I'm seated, I feel like I live in a different zip-code and land in a different tax bracket; it's kinda nice. And even though I go for lunch (because the omakase is cheaper) and there's hardly anyone there to "see" me living large, it's still nice to pretend for a few hours. The wait-staff have mastered the art of "teamwork" and never miss a beat. Always folding napkins when patrons leave for the bathroom, picking up empty plates on cue, always explaining everything about what it is you're eating, (because sometimes you really cannot tell)...unlike SO many eating establishments, they've been trained on how to be attentive, yet absent, helpful, but not arrogant. The food is obviously unmatched. I'm not a sushi- connoisseur or anything, but entrusting the chef with your dining experience is a rare opportunity, one that you can do safely at Morimotos; everything is fantastic. Even if you don't enjoy raw, there is plenty of non-raw food on the menu that you cannot find anywhere else, like the rock-shrimp tempura, which is so so so good I could eat it everyday. I particularly like the omakase, since having so many options makes it difficult for me to choose, and I've never been let down. I don't feel like I'm doing a very good job of conveying the great assimilation of tastes and sushi dishes here, so I think you should just check it out for yourself...some of the stuff just blew my mind and that's as articulate as I can get. The Stephen Starr thing can get a little old in Philly, but the man has perfected the concept of the "dining experience"...he sticks to the theme and he does it well.
