On one of our little adventures, my friends and I were stumbling around Ivar and Vine coming from Boardner's and decided to head up Selma as a shortcut to Cahuenga looking for more trouble to get into. We found the Piano Bar and headed on in. The first thing I noticed was the decor. It has a creepy southern gothic feel to it. I suddenly felt like I was in the Disney haunted mansion or stuck in a William Faulkner novel. The walls are painted black and silver glazed mirrors are hung all around. There is an old piano to the back right of the room which is used regularly for the house blues band that plays there on Friday and Sunday nights. The band alway rocks the house! The wooden bar is nice, long, and roomy. The decorations behind the bar are sparse and mainly just showcase liquor selection they offer which is mostly higher end stuff but not extensive. The service is friendly and efficient but not always knowledgeable. The drinks are moderately priced. This is a pub peeps. There are no fancy cocktails or food. Its for beer swilling and shot taking. I HAVE had a glass of absinthe here but the bartender had no idea how to serve it. He didn't chill it properly and served it in a double shot glass. It was warm and disgusting and I haven't ordered a cocktail since. Now I just stick to beer and a shot. We have come here a lot since our first foray. I love bars with patios and this one has a cute set up outside. I grab a heineken and sit on one of those little park benches lined along the brick wall underneath the fake props that feature a balcony setting with potted flowers and open window shutters. I like to come here at night when they turn on the little white christmas lights that are hanging over the patio. Everytime I come here I meet someone new. One time we met a group of Irish girls and ended up drinking up all of the booze in Hollywood as we descended upon more pubs afterwards. We shut down the town that night. We drank the city dry. We even lost one of the girls along the way. She ended up going home with a bartender. Did she ever make her flight back to Ireland the next morning? I will never know but it all started at the Piano Bar.

The ambiance is great. The place is just as big as a large living room. By 11:30, its packed to capacity. Hardly any space to stand. Newer folks are generally asked to wait outside if the bar is already full. That perhaps is the only bummer. If you want to meet some decent crowd of desi/asian chicks, this is the place to be. The bar attenders were great. The drinks are a little expensive although they were nothing out of the ordinary. The bouncers were very friendly. If you want to avoid the cover charge of 5$, make sure you be there by around 10 on Saturdays. The other way would be to get to know the bouncers by name and by talking to them so that next time, a hug and a peck will take you in, even if you are standing in the end of the long line. (Girls, this is for you). This was my first time to Bob Bar and definitely wont be the last time. Boo-yah!!
