My girlfriends and I went to dance last Saturday night while we were in the city, and we were sorely disappointed. The DJ kept switching songs literally every 15 seconds which was quite frustrating and annoying. And as already mentioned in previous posts, the random tables in the middle of the dance floor felt like they'd been strategically placed for the sole purpose of tripping you while dancing. Yes, there were beautiful dancers climbing on curtains- but try watching them with your head tilted upwards towards the ceiling, while maneuvering your feet around heavy wooden roadblocks on the dance floor, and all this whilst trying to keep some rhythm with the crazy bipolar music. Also, the crowd was younger than I would have liked, I'm guessing maybe in the range of 21-24...so it definitely was not my scene, personally. It was almost comical getting hit on by baby-faced skinny Asian boys. All in all, I regret that of all the clubs in NYC, we had to pick this one. Maybe we'll have better luck next time we're in town.

Simply the best place in the city for live music...or for a private party for that matter. Once you get past the extremely large (though actually friendly and reasonable) doormen, you enter what can best be described as a rat-pack era, clubby Italian oasis. Perhaps that's because this IS a rat-pack era joint (moved to its current location from it's original Market St. spot sometime in the '50's). I've seen endless amazing shows here including St. Germain, Van Morrison, Devotchka, Robbie Williams, Bebel Gilberto, Air, and Groove Armada...and yes, I'll admit, a few Super Diamond shows. Perfect sight lines, top-flight sound system and acoustics. The bartenders mostly have been there forever and are as classic as the place. Sure the glasses are a little small, but the drinks are plenty stiff. Yes, they don't take credit cards....what do you expect - this place is old school at it's finest. And if you still don't think it's old school, they have bathroom attendants...and even have ice in the urinals - not sure what that does, but it seems WAY old school cool. And if you're really lucky, you'll be there on a night with the girl in the fishbowl performing....look closely at the fish tank behind the side bar. Bimbo's has been a focal point of SF nightlife and culture for over 70 years....here's to 70 more.
