oscar's is a dive, but far from the diviest of dives (hi dirty franks, i love you.) that is, you won't be sitting on dangerously wobbly stools with completely tattered upholstery, and there's actual working locks on the bathroom doors. you probably won't be wondering where your bartender/server disappeared off to for the last hour, or when someone's gonna jab the weird bum in the corner to wake him up. and of course, you'll have to go outside to smoke. all of which is to say, you can bring a big group or a date here, grab a big booth, buy a buncha rounds & drink relatively for cheap.. prissier types won't be totally skeeved out because the place isn't super grimy. drinks tend to be really strong, which i consider a plus. i don't find myself in this area a lot on drinking nights, but it's a good standby when good dog's packed. on most weekdays, it's not crazy-loud & you can actually hear your own conversation. just remember to bring cash-- no credit cards accepted.

I did the three course deal for weekday lunch. We got there pretty late (around 2), so the restaurant was pretty much all empty. Walking in, my first impressions were that this place was swank, flirty, trendy which is apparently W hotel's schtick. Spice Market fits in well with that vibe because the whole dining experience there is just fun. We got seated on these leather couches with pillows, so it was more of a lounge feel than a restaurant. The server uniforms are eggplant colored tunics. The menu consists of pan-Asian (including South Asian influences) street food fusion combos. I started with a coconut and chicken soup, the portion of which was HUGE. I had shrimp pad thai for the main course. The noodles and sauce were sub-par, but the presentation and the cooking of the shrimp made up for it. There were about six large pieces of shrimp in there. For dessert, I had the mango sorbet. It comes in a small take-out container, but we ate it in the store. It was actually very heavy, especially for sorbet, but I liked it a lot. It didn't taste like mango flavoring, but actually like they used mango pulp. Good food, high quality, cheap. It really was a great impromptu lunch. The only downside is that there is no free parking anywhere. We paid $6 for valet.

I had a GREAT time here Friday night. They have different music playing on different floors, so if you don't like what's playing on one floor then walk upstairs to a different song. And if you wander up to the second floor you can incorporate some pole dancing into your moves. Had lots o laughs dancing upstairs. This place reminded me of being in LA. A nice change from the other bars I've been to in San Francisco. I also didn't have to wait too long for my drinks because they have multiple bars to accompany their multiple dance floors. I'm thinking I will be back here to dance again.
