Lower Polk is exploding. It's drawing crowds from all over North Beach, the Marina, and Russian Hill. This can make a night out there a lot of fun, but it can also result in block-long lines for mediocre bars like McTeague's. That ain't right. If you're going to attempt to cross the sea of bargoers in the Polk-side of the TL, you need to know that there's something good waiting for you on the other side. Mayes is that distant shore worth pursuing. Lines will form outside this bar around 11pm on a weekend. But inside you'll find that they do a good job of controlling the size of the crowd, unlike Vertigo or McTeague's. The bar is spacious with high ceilings, a long, classy-looking bar, and an attentive staff. The dance floor is ample. I also feel like the vibe here is more welcoming than it is at the neighboring bars.

It just didn't impress me. First of all, this place is in the middle of the L.A. Ruins. What are the L.A. Ruins, you may ask? It's what I call the area surrounding Bordello that has nothing but demolished buildings that undoubtedly have Fight Club-esque riot gangs and talking schizophrenic rats inhabiting them. Now, on the one hand, it kindofsortof goes with the theme since a brothel in the 20s would've likely been in a shady area of town... so we'll let this pass. The night I went, I had to pay a cover charge of $10.00. Let me just say, I could've gone to a much swankier Edison or Seven Grand & not had to have payed $10.00. From what the bouncer said, it sounded like this wasn't the norm. The place wasn't really crowded, which was a plus since it turned out to be WAYYY smaller than I thought. Ya... those pictures you see above: REALLY DECEIVING. It's cute and I love the themed decorations, but considering they're in the middle of the Ruins, they definitely have room to expand. The bartenders were pretty cool, but the drinks were just OK. Overall, I did have fun and enjoyed the atmosphere, but I just believe they can do so much better.

This is a great place to get beat-to-death by a roided-up, spiky haired guy in a shiny black button-down. You'll swear you were on the Sunset Strip and your last thoughts as his cologne fogs your eyes, and the life slips from your body will be "Holy shit, is this guy wearing a gold chain bracelet?" You won't care, you'll just be happy you're leaving Busby's...
