by Erin M. on For some reason, the Tribeca Knitting Factory was one of my all time favorite venues even though it was kind of dirty and oftentimes had questionable sound. Being able to have three shows in one space at the same time was just astounding to me. The Williamsburg version of the Knitting Factory is slightly different, offering two spaces, one primarily functioning as a bar and the other as the performance space. Luckily, I was pleased with it but still am nostalgic for the venue I attended frequently years ago when I still called New York home. I attended Kilimanjaro's EP release recently and was delighted to hear some fantastic new bands in addition to them, such as Nook. My friends and I arrived during the first band's set and after getting drinks from a ridiculously friendly and helpful bartender, we head into the performance area. The sound was atrocious but I think some of this can be attributed to the heavier sound this band had. It simply was not suited for such a high volume. My friends and I opted to watch their set through the glass that separated the front bar and the performance space. The sound for both Nook and Kilimanjaro was much better. Their musical stylings also were better suited for the small space. While not at capacity, this still came off as a wonderful space for a show as it is not very deep, but rather very wide, keeping the audience at just a little more than a few arm's lengths from the performers. Personally, I tend to prefer spaces set up this way. Even if it were extremely crowded, I doubt anyone would ever feel distant or not connected to the show for this reason; you're close, always. In addition to the front area, there is a bar in back. Drinks are on par with what one would expect to pay for strongly made non-well drinks (Absolut Brooklyn-$7) and on tap beer ($5-$6). After midnight, the bartender informed us that there are specials that include $3 beer and $4 well drinks. Hello, drunk. The "Totally Awesome" karaoke on Wednesday nights offers the widest selection of songs ever (400 pages of songs that ranges from Nine Days to Queen to Christmas carols), but the emcee totally ignored my friend's song request in lieu of allowing the more hipster looking kids perform awkward Reba McIntyre covers. Oh well, what can you do? With excellent low-profile bands being booked, fairly inexpensive ticket prices, and a rockin' bar, I will definitely be back when venturing through New York again. FYI-$20 minimum on cards and I was served drinks in glass all night, which apparently is not always the case per other reviews.

Got there around 11:30, -Drink was 12 bucks... 50 dollar minimum Danced for a bit, headed over to E-Vill for cheaper drinks (@Boilerroom), and got back at 2. +Still no line at 2am -Drinks still 9/12 bucks +Danced for 2 hours... annoying hipsters from previous bar followed us here +Music is good, you know when you wanted to go to the bathroom for the last hour and haven't had a bad song this is good -Friend went home with some guy he found, I paid entire taxi myself :( All in all, pretty good place on a Sunday... I'd probably be back, but pregaming of course :)
