Everyone had been raving about this place, so I decided to check it out. I should have stayed at home, played loud music and danced around my room. First, I was happy to arrive and had been told that there was free valet parking. It is not free. It is 10 bucks to have a guy park your car in a lot that looks as though it is where they take repossessed cars or totaled cars. Sketch. The snooty staff informed me that my guests and I were not on the "guestlist" even though I put us on it way in advance and even received a confirmation. Whatever. They tried to make us feel important by saying that they can make an exception and let us in this time. How sweet of them. After we entered, I could see why. There was no one up in the place! My friends and I got really drunk in order to have a good time. There was no one dancing and everyone was standing around staring at one another like we were at a sixth grade dance or something. Lame! There was a photographer who kept taking pictures of the same girls over and over again. I guess because they were willing to facebook slut it up for him. The bartenders were cool though! If you spend money, they will take care of you! And what was up with the go-go dancer? She looked like she was fresh out of high school! I wanted to ask her if she was allowed to be up this late and if her parents knew where she was. Skip this place if you can. Not worth it!

This is reason number one why I should never go somewhere without first reading Rateclub.  Two-way mirror in the bathroom, WTF!  a) someone or a sign should warn you of that before going into the bathroom b) people who have been drinking don't pay attention to signs so maybe....just don't do it! Can't provide the most accurate review because this night was a forget-my-life level of alcohol consumption.  We came here after another event and got right in and then decided on table service after a round or two.  The good treatment may have been due to the fact that we were all couples and dressed up.

I've said it before (in my review of Taverna Plaka), and I'll say it again: In my observations, Greek = loud, both visually and audibly. Not that that's a bad thing. Loud can be fun sometimes. Opa! I was perusing Google Earth the other day and noticed, from the outer space view, this bright blue, radiating spot blinking at me from what appeared to be the Southeast US. When I zoomed, and zoomed, and zoomed...I saw the intersection of I-85 and Clairmont Road and then it hit me -- it's that new Greek place, Mykonos Taverna. I need to get on down there and try it, I thought. And so I did.* With my somewhat regular dining companion in tow, Tulie L and I descended upon Mykonos like two kids at Christmas, excited to see what the place had to offer. We were greeted by some of the kindest people doing the traditional "hold the door open" welcome...one on each of four doors. As the hostess led us to our table, we learned that they'd just been open about a week and you could tell they were grateful to have us and excited about the future of their restaurant. The place is huge -- big bar area, large patio, lots of neon lights and bright tiles. And lots of smiling faces. Our server was friendly and entertaining. The menu is large with a big section of Greek style casseroles, the as-expected variety of kabobs, gyros, salads and a smattering of Gringo-friendly American fare if you just have a hankerin' for a burger or wrap instead of some spanakopita or moussaka. Tulie and I started with an order of fried calamari. It was prepared with larger squid, the rings looking almost like wide onion rings.  It was tender, nicely fried and served with a small bowl of marinara sauce. We polished it off quickly. They also brought a small sampler plate with a few pieces of pita, a garlicky-mashed potato concoction, chick pea salad and some pickled beets. For my main course I ordered their gyro. I'm always a sucker for this and tend to be drawn to it when at at Greek place. Their version was huge, stuffed full with tons of lettuce, tomatoes, gyro meat and tzatziki sauce. It wasn't be best gyro I've ever had, but fit the bill for the evening. It came with a side selection, and I went with their "Greek fries" which were like boiled potato chunks tossed in olive oil and lemon juice. They were okay, but I wouldn't get them again. It's hard to beat a good old order of french fries with a gyro sandwich. It's nice having a new place relatively close to my neighborhood, but at a safe enough distance that I'm not desensitized by the loudness of the "Greek." haha *Note: This Google Earth experience may or may not be true...leaning toward "may not be." But the place sure is painted this extremely bright, BRIGHT blue.
