Tavern on Broad is not in my regular rotation, though the location is convenient for the lunchtime and after-work crowds. Some folks might find the forty-odd televisions blaring sports and news entertaining, but for our small party just looking to drink and catch up, it was overwhelming; like crawling inside one of the giant screens from Blade Runner and trying to make small talk. We were the guests of a friend who had won a "free happy hour", but this translated roughly into the same happy hour specials that everyone else in the bar was already enjoying. They're not bad- half off most drinks and appetizers. The menu is already decently-priced for Center City, most sandwiches and sides coming in at $6-16. Their sliders were cute and nicely presented; the chicken sliders had a nice smoky taste, and the beef sliders with bacon and cheddar were hearty and not greasy. Their onion rings were a particular favorite- flaky and a little salty, not pre-frozen but batter-dipped and crisp, with a spicy chili-ranch dip on the side. Their mussels were tasty and abundant, with toasted bread and a white wine sauce. Nice! Unfortunately, after enjoying a pretty decent meal, we were informed that about half of the things we'd ordered were not half price after all. The waitress was quick to adjust the bill after we objected, but having to object because the "half-off" policy is clear as mud? Not fun. The beer list was decent, if not inspired, and most things were half-price. The mixed drinks, though, were ridiculous; beyond watered-down. Two different drinks arrived, both consisting more or less of unsweetened iced tea that had been allowed to glance longingly at a bottle of liquor before being brought out to us. We sent them back and got beer instead, but at check time again noticed that the returned drinks appeared on the bill. This time we shrugged and cut our losses, figuring we wouldn't be back. I have to give props to our waitress, who was polite, friendly, and quick to resolve issues. Overall, it's probably a nice spot to grab lunch with co-workers, but if you're looking to do some serious eating and drinking and talking with friends, this might not be the place.

PROS: - Upstairs is hip-hop/ pop and the music was great while I was there. - First drink (stoli collins) was poured well, good amount of stoli, and tasted pretty good. - The guys and gals working the door outside were friendly. CONS: - Even if you are on the guestlist you will have to pay a $5 cover charge. (We went in with VIP so we were in free, but otherwise... be ready to pay up... and wait in a long line!) - WAAAYYY to many people upstairs - literally you cannot even dance, you are being bumped like crazy and it gets annoying fast. They should have both levels playing the DJ upstairs to get the place a little more breathable. Downstairs was pretty empty. - Bartender was a dick. I hate to hate on the bartenders, but one bad apple did really over-react. The bartender working downstairs (who was wearing ear-plugs) YELLED and my friend and I. We were waiting FOREVER to get out drinks while he helped the people around us (who came much later than we did). I told me friend to move over to the other end of the bar (which was empty) to get our drinks- obviously why keep waiting if you don't have to. The bartender saw we were moving and yelled at us to "Go ahead, move to the other side, just GOO". YIKES! I dont know what his problem was, but that was uncalled for! - Drinks are kinda pricey.
