i think i'm giving 4 stars to these LA clubs because they're so much sexier than clubs in sf. there aren't any ugly, bare concrete walls. my girlfriend knew a guy who knew another guy who was "someone," so getting in was not an issue. the bartenders were efficient and attentive, and from what i remember, i don't think drinks were ubsurdly priced (yes!). it wasn't overly crowded, the perfect amount of space to dance on the lower level, upper level, or in the back exposed to all that second hand smoke. the venue reminded me a lot of era in oakland. think: dim lighting, deep purple walls and black velvet decals, and gunmetal unique fixtures. there were tons of sexy people here. hot girls and guys pretty much all around you. lots of plaid and fake tits too, but everyone's having a good time. that's why we're all here. there are a bunch of smokers in the back, but it doesn't matter much when you get to look at shane west chillin by the bar. cute place :)

My experience with Trudy's has 3 phases: 1) Before working there 2) Working there 3) Post working there 1) When I was at UT, working at various OTHER restaurants to pay my way through school, I worked hard to drag everyone to Trudys' after work. They were open late, had cheap, cheap drinks, and I *loved* the Enchiladas Tejana. They don't call them that anymore, but they were the cheese enchiladas with the chile con carne sauce. I went there as often as I could. I still can't really understand the abiding love of the place I had then. But I think it has something to do with a) melted cheese and b) salt-rimmed margaritas on the rocks. 2) Then I got a job at the North location, and managed to slip down to Texas Star as soon as I could, first as a waiter, and later as night shift manager. I got to know the owner, Gary Truesdell, pretty well, and he is a *character*. I know many Trudy's secrets, but my great joys were buying dinner for regulars, and kicking drunken fratboys out. I have to say they really do try to have good service, complaints are taken VERY seriously (or they were when I was there), and they have a couple of fajita marinades and salsa recipes that are really kickass. When I worked there, a crew of really smart and clever folks were running the place, including the inestimable Mike Sherrill, who is now running the Alamo Drafthouse Theaters in Austin, and also DJ Trey Lopez. 3) After working there, and getting my food and drinks mostly for free for a long time, it's really hard for me to go back and have to pay for it. Also it's a very noisy place, and now that I'm all old 'n shite, it makes for a tense dinner and discombobulates me digestive tract
