I really enjoyed my visit here last weekend. A few months ago, some nice looking ladies handed out passes to this place to us Crescent street patrons. When I got it I thought, I don't think I'll ever use it, or I'll save it for a nice night out after a crummy week. So that week finally came last week. The passes could only be used for entry before 11, and anytime from 11 - 12.30 the club, any club is dead. I was just about to tap out and call it an unsuccessful evening until something happened somewhere and the crowd just lit up. We had this interesting group of friendly, fun, unpretentious and alive people. Not at all what I expected. The music was a trendy mix of nineties old skool and modern day hip-hop and top 20 hits. The drinks were expensive and cause you to restrict the night's drinking to a two drink evening or budget wisely. Great time, still. Not at all how I remember the clubs and once you get older all the clubs start to look a little the same, so it's nice to experience something a little different. May try them once again before Christmas and hope for the same luck as before, either that or my visit was a fluke.

I specifically went to this cramped dark bar at the back of the restaurant in the St. Regis hotel lobby on a Saturday evening to celebrate the 75th birthday of the bloody mary at it's place of birth. I very much anticipated the experience and I must say I was let down. First of all, I must say that I probably should have been wearing a jacket, it IS the St. Regis (I was sporting dress shoes, nice jeans and a button up shirt tucked in). That being said, I was given the cold shoulder by the entire staff and had to wait for 10 minutes to order at the bar. The ambiance was mediocre at best. The crowd seemed to be an after-wedding set and a few wall street types. But THE biggest let down was around the bloody mary. I tried to strike up conversation with the bar tender about how cool it was that this is where the drink was invented to no avail. It was by far the worst bloody mary I have ever tasted... and I paid $22 for it. My advice, do what we did, skip the King Cole bar and do the rooftop of the Peninsula!

I live in a highrise in Midtown, and the majority of my friends and neighbors are incredibly friendly, fun gay guys ranging from twenty-somethings to men in their fifties. Blake's is the best gay bar in Atlanta, and the drinks are strong, the patrons are friendly, and the ambiance is as "pub-like" and intimate as a gay bar can be. When I first moved to Midtown, I had fun here watching my friends rate dudes on a scale of 1-10 on attributes such as a hair, tan, arms, and most importantly, a "party butt". Of course, being a single and straight 24-year-old female, the scene did get old for me. Sure, I get a huge ego boost every time I go here, receiving compliments on everything from my "blonde-ness" to my "killer runner's calves" to my "Posh Beckham fashion sense", but it just doesn't hit the spot like a pathetic pick-up line and request for your phone number from a straight dude at a sports bar. Sometimes a girl just wants to flirt, and this ain't the place. However, Blake's is a fun, welcome respite for any chicks that need a break from the typical bar scene and the drunken, groping dudes that go along with it. If you're a gay male in Atlanta, I cannot recommend Blake's enough. It seems to draw a crowd all the time, particularly on weekends with great weather (afternoon and evening). Give it a shot, and you never know - you may be there in time for an unforgettable lip-synching performance from a drag queen or two!
