The other night I went for drinks with a girlfriend at King Cole bar in the St. Regis. A man who very persistently offered to buy us drinks, or steaks if we prefered, asked if we were prostitutes. Being drunk, I laughed and asked if he didn't think a prostitute might try a bit harder (i.e. not have her hair in a bun and be wearing a childish green raincoat and boots) and not make fun of him (he told me my large forehead must signify I was brainy, I retorted with jab about his baldness)? The next day my friend pointed out that everyone in the bar probably thought we were hookers. When we insisted that we were from the city, just looking for a quiet drink the bartender became less jolly and engaging, and when the bald man finally left us alone, two other old guys scooted down the bar and tried to engage us in conversation. I hadn't realized King Cole had a reputation for hookers and wish the bartender had asked him to leave. We turned down his offer for drinks at least 5 times before he tipped the bartender with a $100 bill, and an unrequested second round was lined up next to our unfinished first round.

OMG - I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed a burger so much. I am still dreaming about my Pâté Melt ... I loved that my burger was not ordinary. Their pâté melt was a ground veal & pork burger w/ Swiss cheese, cornichons (aka Gherkin pickles), onions, lettuce, and then spread with lingonberry & dijon. YUM! For sides, I wanted something non-fried - and decided on the "fingerling potatoes, fennel, & carrots" sautéed with tarragon & lemon juice. Delicious & healthy-tasting :) I also tried my friends' fries & onion rings - both great but I recommend the sautéed veggies, esp. if you want something different. And yes, of course we ordered a milkshake! Flip is great about splitting the shakes (if you don't think you can drink a full glass), so my friend & I shared the "Nutella, burnt marshmallow, & hazelnuts". Enjoyed it - and a great way to finish off our meal. Next time I'd like to try their "Pistachio & white truffle" - having fungi in my milkshake just sounds so intriguing! Our server was great, too - friendly throughout our meal. And without asking, our server offered to do separate checks. Yay! Oh - and definitely go early if you don't want to wait. They don't take reservations.
