I read some reviews and was prepared for long lines and crowds. Maybe it was the Giants game or the close proximity to Halloween, but the Academy was not crowded at all! We arrived at 7pm, walked right in, checked our coats, got planetarium tickets, and milled about until the show started. It couldn't have been easier! I had been to the Academy about 3 weeks prior during the day. Dimmed lights, a distinct lack of children and the addition of hard alcohol created a completely different vibe. Passes for the planetarium were gone during our previous visit, so we were stoked to get to see it that night. I could have done without Whoopi Goldberg's narration, but the show itself was pretty good. We ate in the cafe after the show. Pho was $9.50 for a smallish bowl, but it was definitely tasty. I was just happy not to have to eat something that resembled bar food. One of my friends got a giant plate of ribs with three side dishes and she said it was really good. It sure looked delicious! As it was the Thursday before Halloween, costumes were encouraged. Some people went all out with Academy themed costumes (jellyfish, penguins, gorillas, scientists) and some just dressed up for a night on the town. The aquarium was pretty fantastic. Lights were low and the music was loud. People were dancing around and looking at the fish. I only saw one couple that became drunk to the point of belligerence. Alcohol was certainly plentiful, but I think something about being in a museum kept people from getting too out of hand. There are bars EVERYWHERE so getting a drink isn't an issue. They had a signature drink with absinthe which was good and fairly potent but a little too sweet. Also, my friend ordered one and then I ordered one from another bartender and they were prepared differently (one was shaken in a cocktail shaker). Drinks are pricey for the amount of alcohol you get: $8-$12. I don't have much of a tolerance for alcohol and two drinks normally is way more than enough. I wouldn't have driven after having two drinks at Nightlife, but I certainly wasn't as intoxicated as I was expecting. We left around 10:25 (it went until 11pm that night) and hit a pub over on Irving street to round out our night. I had a lot of fun, and would love to come back again. If drinks were cheaper, I would be back more often.

Martunis is hilarious and the drinks are big and strong! The delicious concoctions make it very easy to over do it. They loose one star for being overly crowded. Its no secret!

Nice small venue that offers good music and standup comedy. The best thing about Bimbo's is it's location in North Beach. Tons of great food nearby, cool bars, excellent scene.
