My experiences with the Middlesex have been really hit or miss. I was first told of it's existence by my cousin, who told me it was the most dance-y, hipster-y club he'd been to in Boston. I was intrigued. Most of the times I've gone were on Thursdays, and each of those times have been sort of a letdown. It's not like every Thursday night was the same brand of boring - some Thursdays were more fun than others, but the energy on those nights was never as high as I would've liked. Whereas the few times I've gone on Saturdays I've had a lot of fun and been able to dance to my heart's content. The only problem with going on Saturdays is that there is ALWAYS a line after 10:30pm and you often have to wait in it for at least a half an hour. The drinks are middle range to expensive, there's a cover if you come after 9 or 10 on most nights, the DJ's range from out-right boring (same-old-techno beat with so little bass you can't dance to it), to OK (same-old-techno beat with enough bass for dancing), to eclectic and fun (pop hits, motown, alternative, old school rap, etc), and the space is just one giant room, but it's modern and chic-ly sparse so the atmosphere is pretty spot-on for a hipster club. I'd recommend going on a weekend night to check it out. Bring a good group of friends who like to dance and who you can talk with while you wait in the line, and order a few, strong drinks once you get inside. Not exactly the dance paradise I was looking for, but it's fun enough if you go on the right night.

What a gorgeous hotel in the thick of all the Hollywood madness. Beautiful staff, comfortable poolside seating at the Tropicana for a sidecar and some smokes. Has everyone always been this gorgeous in LA? I didn't notice growing up. Greatest deal at the Roosevelt - $23 for valet parking and you can come and go with the car as you please. Rented a convertible mustang for this incredible February weekend, sunny, warm and perfect. There was an orchid in our room, a perfectly soft yet firm bed, a big image of a young Lou Reed hung on the wall (Timothy Greenfield-Sanders?), so cool and all kinds of people watching us come and go from the sidewalk. Felt like a star.... Feb 2010 - Just back from another visit. Poolside room. Morning swims. Little jaunts in the convertible. Afternoon wine on the balcony. Pure heaven.
