Went to Kat's for the first time this week. It's what I guess you'd call a "hole in the wall" spot but I mean that in a nice way. I went to hear a live latin/salsa band play and to get a little dancing in. I was able to do just that. It's small and hard to find if you don't know where to look. The drinks that night were just ok. My friend ordered a pizza but didn't really like it. I didn't try the food. I'll definitely go back to hear a band play in laid back atmosphere. Oh, and maybe not every Wednesday but when I was there they had free salsa lessons which was fun.

I've been twice now and can't say I'm happy I spent my money or time here. The first visit was okay. I took my brother for his birthday which was kind of awkward. The portions were small and mediocre. I think we ended up spending around $80 just in drinks -- translation: We each had 3 of their specialty cocktails. The "entertainment" was just some coked up gay guy in a bunny suit, but we went on a Wednesday night, so we figured our expectations shouldn't be too high. I went back with some friends on Valentine's day, lured by the $10 cover for the Suicide Girls party. That was a mistake. They didn't open the doors to the dining room until about an hour and a half after the door to the club opened...so we basically spent an hour pressed up against the bar, gasping for air and unable to move as more people came in with nowhere to go. My friends and I have since acknowledged that, had we been able to actually we move, we would have left. It was just not worth it. Once the party did start, it strangely cleared out right away. Sorry, don't mean to hate on anyone from the burbs (having lived there myself at one point in my life) but Supperclub is pretty much a place for people from San Jose or Walnut Creek to go because they want to act like they know SF.  I'm sure when I was younger and more impressionable, I would have really liked it. But I'm not about to spend $80 on drinks for a laser show on white walls. And also, I can think of better things to do on a Saturday night then watch Betty, the 56 year old State Farm Secretary from Menlo Park get in touch with her "artistic" side by taking off all of her clothes on the dance floor. So, I'm two visits in, and as the saying goes: "Fool me once..."

I hit up Taverna Plaka with a large group for a girlfriend's bachelorette party. Upon our arrival around 9 p.m., we were greeted by a boisterous dance train of tipsy thirty- and forty-somethings. A woman almost immediately took me by the hand, welcoming me to join the rowdy line that snaked around the restaurant's teeming tables. While we waited for our table, I sipped a cocktail from the bar--the Mia Tia, swirling with flavors of vodka, orange juice, pineapple and, somehow, coconut. About 15 minutes later, we filled up a long, wooden table, ordering a huge assortment of appetizers. The fried cheese, squeezed with a bit of lemon, was sinfully delish--a huge slab of artery clogging delight. I'm not sure if the bread and hummus automatically came with our meal or not, but I found Taverna Plaka's hummus-crushing concept interesting. The whole chickpeas, mixed with spices and olive oil, were provided to us in bowls, requiring us, the diners, to mash it into a fresh, smooth, hummus paste. YUM. As an entree, I ordered the Gyro Souvlaki--shaved roast lamb on a pita, with tomato slices, red onion and a yogurt sauce on the plate to accent the dish as I pleased. While I shoved the gyro into my face, the bachelorette was summoned to dance on a small dresser in front of our table, so it was interesting to watch her shake her booty, dressed in a jingling belly dancer's belt. After we finished our meal, the area was cleared for more table-top dancing. The girl at the table beside us was celebrating her 25th Birthday, although in her 1980s-inspired dress, she looked more like 40. However, I'm not pointing this out to insult her fashion choices--I thought it was cool that she flailed on the table alone, not caring who was watching, nonchalant about her white girl dance style or lack of wardrobe sense. The service was all right. The waitress didn't bring drinks to my friends and I who ordered "just" a Diet Coke or water. I had to ask three times for a water. However, when I requested a passion fruit martini, the waitress immediately brought the sugar-rimmed glass out. The girls and I also smoked an apple-flavored hookah--my first experience with such a device. As you can see, we planned to go all out, since our friend is getting married; however, we were shocked that the bill came to only $20 apiece--and there were at least a dozen girls in our group, who ordered several appetizers, an entree, cocktails and a hookah round. I was pleased that the evening didn't destroy my budget. Fun times at Taverna Plaka. I'm not itching to go back, but I'm glad to have experienced a little Greek nightlife.
