The place was pretty nice upstairs where the main entrance is ... and where all the ravey techno music is. Downstairs there's a decent size room for the "hip hop". From what I remember they played much older hip hop stuff.. I don't remember going nuts over any song - didn't play Lady GaGa, Britney, or those other songs that are always fun and get the girls pumped up. random notes: - never had to wait for the ladies bathroom..and there were only 4ish stalls! - the place was pretty big...the room upstairs (where you walk in) is nice, but the downstairs is just normal..semi-dungeon-ish - sorta sucks bc if you get a table they put you upstairs, and everyone goes downstairs for the music - parking is pretty easy to find. i think everyone either parked right around the block or in front of the place - tons of ppl say the place is full of asians..but from what I remember there was a good mix of ppl - $10 on guestlist before 11 - $3 coat check Although the place was just "a-ok" but i had a good night so im going to bump it to 4.

You bring the rock, and I'll bring the roll. I'm actually not really sure what that means, but I suppose it was my attempt to introduce the fact that El Rio is a good venue to experience the rock and roll. I'm aware that this bar/venue also does salsa lessons and such like that, but I tend to always have rock and roll on the brain (among other things), so I'll focus on that. The upside to a venue like El Rio or the Uptown (in Oakland) is that the stage is in its own room next to the main bar area. This therefore separates the haves from the have-nots - meaning, those who have the appreciation for the rock and roll, and those who have not. The haves enjoy the music without the people conversing loudly at the bar, and the have-nots can converse loudly without distraction from the music. It's a win-win. Then you throw in the bonus of solid beer/drink selection, pool table, jukebox, dive bar charm and close proximity to 24th St. BART - it's good times all around. And even when the night is a bit cold and drizzly, the patio is simply divine.

Speaking only regarding the food (I have yet to attend any night they have DJs) do not come here expecting to get full. Don't come here to eat at all in fact. The portions couldn't satisfy my 10lb. dog, and the seating arrangements are so awkward that you are sure to drop your tiny portion on the floor without it ever reaching your lips. I appreciate the high ceilings, but I am sick to death of trying to perch on some ridiculously low square ottoman, resting my drink and nosh on an equally low coffee table, all the while trying not to look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame, @ some posh lounge. After I ate here with friends we went across the street and ordered greasy slices from Hi-Fi.
