by Hong Roundtree on Can we get two ratings here? I'd love to break the rating down for you and say that for "regional flavor" The Varsity should get a five. We were told that it's a "must see" place while you are in Atlanta. I will admit that the yelling of "What'll ya have"?, constantly, was a little unnerving. But the atmosphere and the drive-in is definitely something that is worth seeing. It takes you back in time for sure. Was it the first drive-in? I'd like to know. It's really big and it was really busy. The food would get a three and while I agree that it had its share of grease, wasn't that bad and wasn't that expensive. I saw the fried apple pie, but couldn't bring myself to taste it. I did have the fresh peach ice cream for dessert and it was quite good. You must stop if you are here in Atlanta. But be forwarned vegetarians... there is nothing, nada, zero, here for you to try.

Even if you were - which I'm willing to concede if it's true - I am rather attached to my accessories, and no amount of harrassment around the dance floor is going to charm or annoy me into giving it up. Pun fully intended. So that's the crowd. Proceed at your own risk. Or maybe you like that sort of thing. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I came here last night for the Barrister's Ball - aka Law School Prom - despite reservations about North Beach in general. (Go for the food, run like hell when the popped collars come out.) Outside: you walk past a lot of skeevy strip joints. Inside: the space is really pretty. Very modern brick-and-metal decor. Two levels and three main rooms. Coat check. There's only one bathroom on the first floor, which was closed for most of the night. Upstairs, there's a bigger bathroom, with a bathroom attendant...and the general consensus was that bathroom attendants are: a) unnecessary b) uncomfortable c) did I mention unnecessary? I'm a modern girl, I can dispense my own soap, find my own empty stall, and pick up my own towel. Bar itself: Any bar without beer on tap is an automatic meh. And wine is $8. Ouch. Music: standard 80's/pop/hip hop mix. It was a great venue for barrister's ball, but once they started opening up the club to the general public, it became the guido-populated dance club of my nightmares. If you're anything like me, go for private events only. It was a fun night, but I was perfectly happy to leave after 11, and I don't think I'll go back. Just not my scene...
by Adnan Z. on A good late night spot that you end up at if you don't feel like going to sleep, but definitely not a place I'd recommend if you're planning a night out. The crowd varies and can be pretty blah if you end up here on a Friday/Saturday. I tend to have fun when I'm here, but its probably more my state than the club. There are better options in the area.
