by Julian Stanely on I was really looking forward to the reopening of Mayes on Polk, though probably should've waited another couple of weeks. Lots of potential, but the poor service really marred our experience. Three of us came by on Tuesday night and had: * half dozen oysters * ahi tuna poke * Surf and Turf * crab cakes Total per person, including tip: $25. Not bad on pricing- especially for fresh seafood- though we did share two entrees between three people. Food: Raw oysters and mignonette sauces were awesome, and the surf and turf was too- latter is really worth getting just for the horseradish mashed potatoes. The ahi tuna appetizer was surprisingly tasteless, almost as if the chef forgot to add soy sauce or any seasoning. But yet, the crab cakes would have been perfect with a little less salt. Total downer: service. Our waitress was nice...but the restaurant was certainly not busy and we spent a frustrating amount of time trying to find her. ie. after we finished our oysters, the empty platter was left on the table for so long that we couldn't manuver around it to reach the next course. After fruitlessly trying to find someone, we ended up shoving the platter onto the empty table nearby. When we wanted to order another dish, it took 15 minutes to grab the waitress' attention. The check? She was still nowhere to be found. We tracked down another waiter who took our credit cards. Absolutely gorgeous decor (pretty amazing for Polk Gulch!) with lounge area, full bar, raw bar, dinner seating, etc. If the service and minor food issues are corrected I could definitely see myself visiting often.
by Noe Bihler on I've had many lunches and dinners here, all experiences different. There are a few things that are consistent with Pietro's: it's very loud, it's good whether you go with only one person or a large group, the portions are large, and the bread is delicious. After that, it gets interesting. My last dinner here, the waiter was terrible and didn't pay nearly enough attention to our table (no water refills, screwed up the order). I've gone other times and the service has been great, so hopefully you get the latter. The appetizers are usually pretty good and the cannolis are fantastic. The gorganzola cheese tortellini is exceptional, salad is good, and most of their other entrees are at least decent. Get something with lots of cheese because they tend to use quality cheeses. I wouldn't go here to get 5-star quality Italian, but if you want something that is consistently tasty, Pietro's is a good choice.
by Laura F. on I really wanted to like Harlot. Like... I REALLY REALLY wanted to. I'd heard great things about it from straight girlfriends and gay guy friends, which is always a good sign. The good: The DJ was awesome! He was mixing songs that I love with songs I never thought I'd love. The bad: the dance floor was tiny and the moment I'd start gettin down, some idiot would put his hands on me. Can't a girl dance it up without being groped?! The good: my cocktails were delicious. The bad: the bar was swamped, it took forever to order a drink, and the 'tenders seemed totally stressed out. The good: the decor promotes a chic vibe, and I expected a chic crowd. Instead it was gel-head dbags in button downs and ladies in "jeans and going out tops!" In other words... the eclectic funk I had anticipated was, in reality, your typical Marina crowd displaced in SOMA. Bummer, Harlot.
