by Gerda Voetberg on WOW - what a beautiful spot!! Mayes has it all....drinks, dinner and dancing! The decor is absolutely gorgeous with the original intricate tin ceiling, sexy animal-print chairs in the lounge by the fireplace and extra comfortable booths for a long dinner. Nice ambient lighting. Loving the orange 'pop' color throughout the restaurant as well - stunning interior design. I have been to Mayes twice now since they opened last week. First was a weeknight dinner with friends. We started with the ceviche and also the salmon carpaccio - both delicious with homemade chips. My entree was the chicken with creamy polenta and veggies. This dish is a complete freakout as far as chicken goes. The flavors were exceptional - a must try!! My friends got the scallops (excellent), Kobe burger with blue cheese (fantastic) and the salmon - everyone was more than pleased with the food. Nice wine list too and good wines by the glass. Oh, the prices on the menu are a little hard to believe especially with the top notch quality of food being served. The most expensive entree on the menu was Surf n Turf for $20. Very affordable! In the front of the restaurant is a beautiful raw bar (oysters & prawns on ice always look fancy!) and a very long bar with expert bartenders mixing up amazing cocktails. I had Josh make my drinks and I ordered the Maiden Lane Manhattan. It was incredible! I can say this as I am a "Manny" connoisseur. It was made with Makers Mark and Punta Mins (sp?) sweet vermouth....the extra special part of this Manhattan was the cinnamon infused oil. It was so festive for the holiday season! They have a great cocktail menu, but I asked for surprise cocktail pre dinner. My only requirement was it be made with vodka...yes I was testing the bartender to see how original he would be. He made it with Jalapeno pepper simple syrup - shockingly deelish! Josh is very attentive & creative behind Mayes' beautiful bar...a true mixologist. The second time I stopped in was this past Saturday around midnight. Had a cocktail and got my groove on with the DJ spinning in the back. I believe they have a DJ on Friday & Saturday nights. The place was packed with pretty people!! No cover charge btw. Oh and one more thing for the ladies....gorgeous bathrooms and even a tufted ottoman in the larger stall for a friend - ohh. Mayes is a beautiful addition to this up and coming neighborhood. The city has placed huge new planters with Palms outside along Polk Street to dress it up - nice touch. Mayes makes you feel special upon entering with the sweet attractive hostesses, cute bartenders & servers and even the guys managing Mayes are darling! FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY BABY!!!
by Angele Weich on I guess its difficult to build a restaurant reputation only based on Mc Donald'ish food. My gf - aka as the queen - dragged me here after royally kicking my butt hiking one of the "minor" mountains (she kindly told me I would have died on Camelback). Sooo, at least she told me she knows a place that would accommodate the sweaty royalty and the fading myself and get me back on track with a burger. Surprise, we got a table outside and the wind was nice too, therefore no complaints from other patrons. I have to admit, the burger was awesome - we originally wanted to share one - but like the dog whisperer Cesar Milan (calm & aggressive, aeh assertive) I convinced her by defending my territory that she has to get her own burger and her own sweet potato fries. I ate them all and as a punishment for violating my diet plan had to hike 2 more mountains. It was well worth the additional sweat.
by Jon S. on Awesome, awesome halibut. Good and unique (though I wouldn't exactly say mind blowing) drinks. One of the best spots the Mission has to offer, although the other reviewer's roach story is a bit disturbing.
