I can't believe I haven't reviewed Opera yet. I must have been avoiding it until I gathered my thoughts. With the shutting down of Compound and Fever, it seems that Opera really is the only big club that's left in the Midtown area. There are some clubs like Velvet Room (too far out of the city) or clubs too far in the city, so many times my clubbing nights are restricted to Opera and Opera alone. I don't go clubbing often, probably once every 4 months when my friends feel like going and invite me along. I do have to admit that the layout of the club is very nice. There's a big main room dance floor complete with flashing lights and fog descending on the crowd. It gets a little crowded after midnight but whatever, it's a club. The main room has two side bars that you can go to as well. Overlooking the main room is an elevated VIP section that looks exactly like a real opera's box seats. I've actually been to the VIP section once and it's nice to get service quicker and personalized but it's nothing special. The music is, as expected, really loud, and it plays your typical hip-hop/Top40 fare. After the main room there's a side room that's dedicated to salsa/latin music most of the time. I don't dig the music quite as much but occasionally it ventures into hip-hop music and other pop songs. The bar in this side room is MUCH better to get service and the area in general is a lot less crowded. The outside area has a 3rd DJ spinning more electronica/techno stuff, but the ambient noise of people talking plus the fact that it's outside makes the volume not so intense. This bar is also relatively quick to get service. It's a nice place to take a breather (literally) and escape the music volume of the other rooms. Overall, it is a swank nightclub for hardcore clubbing, and that's nice. There are tons of negatives though. The service, which can be decent in some areas, in general just sucks badly. The drinks are REALLY expensive and you can drop some major bank here. The absolute WORST part is the so-called email entry list. What Opera advertises, as most midtown bars do, is an email list you can sign up for in order to enter the club for free before a certain time. With most clubs, this is a very simple process. You sign up online, you go there on time, you get in for free. Done. With Opera, it's a nightmare. You sign up online, you go there on time, and... you get stuck in a massive line that doesn't move. You show up to the front door at 11:01pm and they try to charge you 20 bucks each. Some saps pay for it and just go in, but what i've figured out is that you just negotiate a price or feign leaving the club and somebody will come up to you and try to get you in for cheaper. I've varied in my results for this, I've gotten completely free entry for women and $5 each for guys, and on other times i've gotten $10 for the women and no budging on the guys. Either way, SOMEONE is getting in for cheaper if you negotiate for a mere 10 seconds. It is DEFINITELY a strategy of theirs to hold the line right at 11pm, I've confirmed it by talking to one of the bouncers at the door. This guy seemed nice and he told me straight up that they do it all the time on purpose and they make a big show of it. We laughed about it together and even he admitted that it's BS. If you really want to get in for free, show up at 10:30 and eliminate any possibility of them screwing you over. If they try to charge you 20 bucks, DO NOT GO FOR IT. Negotiate your price and I guarantee you that you'll save some money. In conclusion, the club is nice and well laid out and I'll probably continue to go there every once in a while for lack of options, but their shitty door policy and service keeps this place at 2 stars for me.

Deciding to celebrate since I've got a new job, a buddy and I went to check out the new place. We arrived at 6 pm, so there was no cover and no wait. Service was good. As a bar appetizer, the spring rolls were pretty tasty and cost $8. We both ordered call drinks. That's where I came in for a slightly unpleasant surprise. One drink apiece and one shared appetizer was $33.95 before tip. Yowza! If I knew I was going to drop $40 for just drinks, I may have chosen differently. The decor is fun, very flashy and "Vegas" light. I'm not sure why the music was so loud when the place wasn't that full. So check it out.  There's a reason they take credit cards.  You may not have enough cash!!!

At least once a month my friends and I head over to Bowlmor for a little bowling action. Sure sometimes you have to wait two hours for a lane, but hey they have a bar! They also have a very nice pool area as well, which actually might not be a bad way to spend a whole night either. It can get a little pricey, especially with all the beer involved, but in moderation it is well worth a trip
