this venue has the worst sound quality out of any priced NYC venues. Ariel Pink's set was practically ruined, with hair-raising high-pitched frequencies arising every few minutes from the mic. the same thing happened for Os Mutantes, but fortunately their crisper and more acoustic-oriented sound played better. another crime: $8 beers in a cup that aren't even filled to the brink... like 3/4 a beer. stay away from the bar directly across from the stage, and instead go for the bar on the side near the bathrooms. you can get $8 Goose Island IPA's there, where it's actually filled to the top. unless an absolutely amazing artist is playing here and nowhere else (which would be a shameful decision by their management), I'll be avoiding this horrible venue.

Of course being from out of town I had to try both this and Pat's back-to-back to determine for myself which place really does have the best cheese steak in town. After trying both, I'm at a draw - here's my two cents to the pot. Of the two, this place really stands out because of the flashy neon lights advertising their corner, the large lit-up picture of a cheesesteak that looked almost Photoshopped in the pictures I took, and the almost daylight brightness of the sitting area that makes eating there seem like the daytime no matter when you actually go. I actually liked the flavor of Geno's cheese steaks better than Pat's. You can actually taste the sliced steak and sauteed onions without being overpowered with too much Cheez-Wiz unlike some other places. I can actually taste the meaty fattiness of the steak and the biting sweetness of the freshly sauteed onions, accentuated with just the right amount of cheesy-saltiness. While the bread was chewier and didn't "melt" into the rest of the cheesesteak ingredients, the ratio of bread to filling was perfect to taste the fattiness/sweetness/saltiness blending into the mild flavor of the bread. Unfortunately Geno's doesn't offer any other fillings (i.e. mushrooms, green peppers) but what they do offer does the job well. Beyond the Cheez-Wiz on the cheese fries, the fries were bland and unimpressive. Go to Pat's if you want good cheese fries. Overall I'm at a loss at which place is better than the other. Regardless of which one I end up at they each have attributes that make for good cheesesteaks, though they have other attributes that make them fall short in satisfying the hunger for the perfect sammich. Perhaps I need to try the provolone cheesesteaks here for better evaluation and comparison.

If you are commitment-phobic, this very well may be the place for you... I often have a hard time figuring out exactly what I want, so Amalia is fantastic for the undecided... The answer: pick 3 items to sample. That's exactly what me and my friends did during a leisurely lunch one Friday afternoon (don't go here if you have to dine and dash)... The lunch special includes a choice of a prix fixe menu or a 3-appetizer sampling (which is what we all picked). Link to Prix Fixe Lunch Menu: http://www.amalia-nyc.... Yuummmm.... Portions were just right - neither scarce or overly abundant. My picks: Eggplant and Goat Cheese "lasagnette" oven roasted tomatoes, catapano goat cheese, basil Sliders-version of the Amalia Burger - taleggio, pickled red onion, bistro frites Fattoush Salad - arugula, mint, feta, toasted flatbread, lemon The restaurant was fairly empty (it also happened to be a rainy day), but the vibe was nice and relaxed. The decor is awesome -- a hidden gem here! I'd like to come back for late-night dinner with a larger group of friends and check out the bar scene.
