Hmm, it's probably lucky I didn't read all the Rateclub reviews until after eating here, or I would probably have been disappointed. D'oh! Too late to see if we paid a cover charge which they didn't mention. It wasn't at all clear from the menu, but I guess it's supposed to be tapas style. Plates varied quite a lot in size, from an almost entree-sized risotto to a barely appetizer-sized scallop dish. Still, I thought the prices were pretty reasonable for the sizes, so in the future I'll just start with a couple and be prepared to order some more if it turns out not to be enough. The food quality was also variable, from excellent to not quite edible. The scallops and risotto were excellent. The crab raviolis would have been good without the strange bitter flavor in the sauce; skipping that next time. The couscous and the broccoli rabe were also tasty, but the cavolo nero was bitter and tough, like eating some overgrown weeds I pulled out of the garden; might have been okay if they'd caught those weeds before they got so big. Three stars for food. Bonus star for good jazz music (worth the $5 cover, if we did in fact pay one). We arrived at 7 for dinner and ended up staying for the whole show, until midnight!

What is it with San Francisco clubs and their lack of good ventilation? Just because its hot as hell inside doesn't make it a "Hot" club. My honest opinion, I hate this club. I only come here because my friends insist in coming here regardless of how much I insist on boycotting this place, forever if possible. A few notes: THE GOOD -------------------------------------------------- ------- *-The bar staff is friendly. *-The drinks are fairly cheap. *-The bouncers won't let me dance on the stage. THE UGLY -------------------------------------------------- ------- -The dance floors are small (both of them) -The ventilation sucks. -The smoking rooms should require all patrons to wear respitory masks or HazMat suits Just be sure to pre-party hard before you get here. You'll need to be pretty sloshed up to have any fun.

The Tex-Mex slash American food at Trudy's is good and will fill you up without boring your taste-buds. Now that that's out of the way... ...Have a Mexican Martini. However, when doing so, be mindful of two things: First, they will only serve you two of these because they pack such a wallop, so don't waste a single sip. Second, despite the fact that most every bar in north America will now make you a Mexican Martini, no other bar on earth will make you one as good as Trudy's. I have no idea what the secret is, and I'm not sure anyone else does either. But a Mexican Martini from Trudy's qualifies as an independent drinking experience, and can make an evening exciting all by itself. The staff at the Trudy's on 30th is generally attentive and friendly, which is quite a feat considering many/most of the patrons at night are college kids and 20-somethings eating free corn chips and drinking the aforementioned Mexican Martinis. The decor/atmosphere is hardly exciting, especially compared to the newer Trudy's locations around town. However, the surrounding neighborhood and proximity to north Guadalupe make this Trudy's location radiate a charm that is all it's own.
