Went on Halloween night. Here's my recap: The Good: Got in for free Ok DJ No long lines at the bar The Bad: Being told they we're "selling out" that night to push bottle service sales- the VIP area was damn near EMPTY $9 for a vodka soda in a mini effing plastic cup.. and I mean MINI size XL chicks squeezed into size SM "costumes" (ok and I'm not a hater, but come on, you KNOW that doesn't look good) When we were leaving the place was surrounded with cops and people getting arrested (we heard someone got stabbed) So hey, will I party there again? Who knows.. I mean I am getting kind of tired being offered crack from dudes outside.

Seriously, what is the deal with this place? I was looking for "old school cigar bar" style, not "yes, I'll be your trophy wife" style. It's like a wannabe Russian Vodka Room in NYC, except with lousy pricing and a lot of plastic surgery roaming around. I went on a Friday evening with a bunch of guy friends, I had made a reservation as was recommended. We got seats in the front room which were pretty good for people watching. But the number of awkward dates between blazer-clad slicksters and skinny jean / over-highlighted women just made me uncomfortable. The drink list was impressive - if you enjoy spending $15 on a cocktail?! Le Club would probably be a routine thing for me if I was still in investment banking, single, and trying to find a sugar daddy...

Ugh. I hate it when bands I love are booked here. And why are they always booked here, anyway? Yes, I understand Webster doesn't really have any competitors with the same capacity. So when you're a band of a certain size, you kinda have to play Webster. But wouldn't you rather book two nights at Bowery than one night at Webster? I'm just sayin... What it has going for it: ++Great booking. ++Fab location. ++Sexy decor. What it has going against it: --Terrible sound. If you manage to score a spot right up front, then you're behind the speakers in a no-mans-land of sound, where everything is muffled and distant. Which means, good view = terrible sound. And if you forego the view for a spot further back in the room, the sound still isn't that great. --Difficult vantage points. The only spot to get a good view, other than right up front, is up in the balcony. And it only works if you're right up against the ledge. Alas, then you're at a distant remove from all the action and energy. --The cost of coat check is insulting. --It's got an identity problem. It doesn't know whether it wants to be a dance club or a live music club. And on weekend nights, this is a real issue. It's the only place in town I've run into that says the headliner will go on at 8pm and actually means it. Why? Because they turn into a dance club after the show's over, and apparently, the dance club part is more important to them. Show up at the average show time like I did, and you'll miss all but the last 15 minutes of the show. Live and learn. And avoid like the plague. Neutral but noteworthy: **Periodic celeb spotting in the audience (i.e. Norah Jones @ M. Ward, and James Iha @ Ladytron.)
