My girl and I had the 14 at XIV. The food was phenomenal. Each bite left me wondering what the next dish would be like and guessing at the amount of detail in what happened with the execution. The downside to this place is the price and perhaps the dark setting of the dining room. Its loud and its dark. Its a hip place to be still, but for me it was all about the food and I felt that price set aside this was GREAT food. At the end of the night my car had been towed since I parked curbside and not in the valet. I should have done valet. The manager called me a cab and got me over to the tow yard after confirming with the tow yard I would be on my way. I was grateful and embarassed. In the end I would still go back to XIV despite the hundreds of dollars blown that night....it was an experience I could care to repeat because the food was so darn good!

I recall coming here about a week or so after it opened, when I still lived in Philly. I delight in my memory of Morimoto being simply the best dining experience I had ever had in my life (and I'm all about fine dining). I relish in the memory because it continues, to this day, to be one of the best dining experiences I have had in my life (for another, see Cafe Gibraltar in Half Moon Bay). There was a large group of us and we all ordered the $125 omakase. Somewhere among my possessions I still have the napkin with each of the 10 or 11 courses scrawled on it. In addition to the omakase, we ordered the kobe beef tartare and oysters foie gras. And, of course, the drinks. I remember waking up the next morning and feeling surprised that I was actually hungry--as if I could ever eat again after that experience! I am thinking that my next trip "home" will have to include a return to Morimoto.

I know.. another drum review of Tao... will this one be any different than the other remarks about a fat Buddha laughing at you for spending a large sum of money on lunch in the worlds corporate headquarters during peak rush hour? well, um yes, you read my mind or perhaps you can just read... I could go on about the elaborate display of roses under a glossy table or discuss the succulence of the duck spring rolls crisped to perfection. Maybe it was the bathroom attendant waiting anxiously in her blase indifference to hand me a toothpick, maybe it's the elaborate detail of the stone encrusted staircase, yes, maybe ...or I could tell you about my last fling at tao years ago and my flat out argument lending toward a glass o diluted g&t in Jeremy Piven's face. Would that make you read me? Doubtful since I am only the 102nd review of Tao? I humor myself and the fly that mocks me but I am here to serve.
