This place is all about location, location, location.  Situated on a wooden barge with amazing views of the Hudson.  You can actually feel it moving if you fixate your eyes on something.  This place gets pretty packed after 6pm on the Thursday night I was there.  Luckily I was able to get a seat and a bucket of beer is reasonably priced. I have not tried the food here.  A very cool place.

After having dined at XIV last night I have determined two things. 1. Thirty five courses of food is too much. Even for me. 2. The stars of 'High School Musical' are annoying. You're probably wondering how in the world I came to think this since these two things have nothing in common with one another and you're right, they don't. I simply decided this because while at XIV, we ordered the entire menu (called "The Gamut" which is 35 courses) and we were seated next to Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens (the two main stars of Disney's 'High School Musical') and a group of their friends. Now I admit I like reading celebrity gossip in trashy tabloids. And yes, I have seen 'High School Musical' (don't judge me!) which is probably why I even know who Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens are. But encountering celebrities isn't actually something I find very exciting. I would never ask anyone for an autograph or to take a photo with them. The sighting is only noteworthy because their group was loud and obnoxious. And yes, loud and obnoxious patrons can be part of the experience when dining out but the food at XIV has so many nuances and facets to it, enjoying it requires quite a bit of attention.  Attention that was taken away during my meal there because they were being so loud. And obnoxious. So that said, let's discuss my other conclusion of thirty five courses being too much food. According to everyone I know, I'm quite the eater (I've ceased to be offended when people say this to me now). But even for me, thirty five courses (five dishes each of shellfish, fish, poultry and light meats, meat and game, vegetables, cheeses, and desserts) is overkill. And not because the food is bad either. The food at XIV is complex, layered, and has so many ingredients and elements to each dish, it's just really hard to take in so many courses. On to the food. Amongst the shellfish, my favorite had to be the Nantucket Bay Scallops with Tempura, Cauliflower, Passion Fruit, and Almonds (despite my strange ability to remember even the most mundane details of things, save a few, I can't really describe the presentation of the dish but only the ingredients). The scallops were tender and the crispy tempura bits were a great contrast. Of the fish, I liked the Caviar Parfait the best. Layered with Caviar, Crème Fraîche, Smoked Salmon, Egg, and a Potato Croquette, this dish was a perfect way to start off the meal. It's hard to say which vegetable dish I liked the most because all were so delicious but if I had to choose, I'd have to go with the Porcini Risotto with Preserved Meyer Lemon and Castelmagno Cheese Foam... Creamy but not overly rich, I could have had a whole bowl of this. The runner up would have to be the Thai Coconut Soup. The flavors were familiar (it tasted like Tom Yum) but the presentation was so gorgeous and different- there was a Kaffir Lime Pana Cotta inside which was just sort of crazy in texture and taste. Out of the poultry, I'd have to go with the Liberty Duck. Perfectly cooked with Lavender Honey Jus, the slab of Foi Gras that came along with it was one of the highlights of the meal. The Angus Rib Cap with Chanterelles, Haricot Verts, and Horseradish Cream was fantastic. It was everything you would want in a dish that featured beef- meaty, juicy, savory, and comforting. I hated the Worcestershire Braised Short Rib. To me, it tasted like canned Dinty Moore Beef Stew. Yuck. Although I can't say I liked all the cheeses and desserts, I'd have to advise you to order all of them. They are so inventive and interesting, just tasting them is an experience in itself. I mean, the Bleu Du Bocage came out in a mound of snow as it had been grated while frozen. The Monte Enebro? With Licorice Ash and Candied Yuzu. Idiazabal with Dates and Smoked Bacon Powder anyone? And the desserts? Wood Ice Cream? C'mon! Whiskey encased in a delicate globe of sugar candy? A Mochi filled with Sweet Potato and Yuzu Ice Cream? Trust me, it's insane. INSANE. To be honest, I'm still reeling from the meal. And I can't remember everything because there was so much of it. But the meal was probably one of the most memorable ones I've ever had. I tasted and saw things I didn't think could be done food-wise. The service was fabulous (when I ended up eating the only piece of Whiskey Barrel Candy in one of our desserts, our server was nice enough to bring out an extra one when I asked) and the decor different. It's a new year and a new year merits new experiences. I'd say XIV is worth putting on your list. I just hope you don't have to sit next to anyone who starred in 'High School Musical'. Unless that's on your list. Then good for you because it just might happen here.

I visited this place for an AIDs benefit so I'm assuming the crowd to be different from the usual scene.  The layout is in an "L" formation.  WIth the left side having a bar, lounge seats, and gallery while the right side hosts a stage and dance area.  I liked how you can in between each area with certain casualness.  The art is rather good as well. Look out for the free mint water.  I got an allergic reaction from it!
