by Virgie Gerdts on With 184 other reviews, you'd think I would be in the know with everyone else regarding the East Side Show Room. This place really is ecelctic and draws an eclectic crowd. I was entranced when I stopped by during the day time - a charmingly reconditioned space that is half soda fountain and half apothecary looking - very cool. The plethora of cool and crazy bourbon bottles and tequila carafes were enough to make me want to come back during the drinking hours. So we did -- and had to wait. No bourgeois buzzers or yelling hostesses. Instead, the hostess called me on my cell to inform me that our table was ready. I kind of liked that. (And I thought it was king of wierd at the same time). The drinks were off the chart creative, generous, and artful. Now that I have entered cougar town (or puma town, as it were), the colored liquors are not something I partake in very often, so I was glad to expend the calories and high percentage of alcohol for such groovy options as a pisco sour. I was really looking forward to the chalkboard specials, and by the time we got there, they were all sold out - not fun. However, the butternut squash soup was delightful (on the second trip - the first time it was cold). The charcuterie was a good choice, but the duck confit was cured with too much salt that I could not eat it. I'll know better next time. Again, the curse of the puma attacked just as the live music started. They were great, but it was 11:00, and I was fading! The service was outstanding. I really like the accommodating manner of our waitress. No attitude, just kindness.
by Vanessa T. on Despite my hopes for this expensive venture, I found the Georgia Aquarium excessively underwhelming. Yes, it cost a lot of money to build. Yes, it is big. Just like your neighborhood Walmart. The experience is too Disneylike: cartoony fish signage, an abundance of children's installations, a focus on merchandising and unhealthy foods, etc. A trip to the aquarium should be informative and fascinating for children and adults alike. I'm also not too keen on the two shark deaths since the aquarium's opening. I might be accused of being an aquarium snob but I much prefer the Tennessee Aquarium and its thematic presentation of various regions, ages, and water types. Or Monterey's incorporation of outside and indoor space. Or any number of aquariums I visited throughout the U.S on random excursions. I stopped short of giving it only one star because it would probably wouldn't be as anxiety-producing or miserable for people visiting with their children.
