I have never had a bad time here. Right across the street from my law school we held many events here - always fun, even on off nights. The decor is classy and sophisticated - unlike most places around there ...ahem..Liquor Store..... The drinks are reasonably priced for a nice place and the crowd is usually cool, good looking, and Bostonian (as opposed to North Shore Ed Hardy types) The music is sick and management and staff are professional and friendly.

This place can get PACKED and the dance floor is on the 3rd level, which gets INSANELY hot and gross. I mean, they should open some windows or something b/c seriously, it's impossible to breath up there when it gets really full. I like a full dance floor (mostly so I can hide my hideous moves from the public eye) but when it's so packed that all you can do is rock back and forth while trying to find air for your suffocating lungs, dancing just loses it's fun. It's also kind of pretentious. They're a "black belt with brown shoes? you can't come in" or "the soles on those shoes will mark our floors, you can't come in" or "you only have 2 girls, not 8 so you can't come in" type of place. You can find better dance places around there with better drink deals too. Pass.

I wouldn't have known of the existence of the Frying Pan if I wasn't taking a late night walk with a friend in around Hudson River Park and noticed swarms of people walking in and out of what seemed like an abandoned pier where the trains used to come in to NYC from NY back in the day. We followed a herd of people in and realized we were walking into a bar/lounge. It was entirely outdoors, mostly covered but you could climb up the stairs and sit on the roof as well. The place and crowd itself seemed quite diverse (gender, age, sexuality, ethnicity), relaxed and attitude free, however, the bartenders were all on the unpleasant side. Anywho, it was a a wonderful spot for a chilled drink and conversation after a long and hot day out. There are excellent views of Manhattan and Jersey City from here, and it's right on the water... Just beauitful!
