Top Flr is a restaurant I've driven by many times and have heard good things about. So I thought it was time for me to try it. We started off with the tuna tartare and edamame appetizers. The tuna was seasoned perfectly and had some heat to it, which I loved. It was on top of very thin flat bread...delicious. The edamame was very simple, but great. I decided on the hanger steak for my entree. This was the only thing I would have changed about my meal. The meat was luke warm and didn't have a lot of flavor. BUT...the brussel sprout side was outstanding. My server was also fantastic. He even gave up a complimentary beet salad because my father said he wasn't a fan of beets. Needless to say...the beet salad was completely gone after our meal. :) Only reason I can't give Top Flr 5 stars is due to my entree meat. It's a place I will go back to again.

Two things happened last night(Thurs). Actually three. 1. I was told that it was dead inside. Since I was with a date plus her friend and we still decided to pay the cover and check it out. Turns out We were the only ones there. It was literally dead. It picked up eventually with another 10 or so. On top of all this, they closed down the club around 12:30. Wtf!? 2. My date's friend left her cell phone for a minute. It was fetched up and given to the promoter guy. Shouldn't it have been handed to the club? Now I need to either go back there or whereever he's going to be at tonight. Wtf!? 3. Ok. Here's the best part. I was forewarned about the valet. Since I was with my date and all I decided to valet. Since she had a large purse and a wallet I asked her to just bring her ID in. I put her purse in the trunk and hid it. This usually works and I valet at least 1 - 2 a day so I know how shady those guys are. After it was over and when I was dropping her off, she found out her $700 was missing. I called the promoter dude again and of course I was told that no one's reponsible. Since I told her to leave it, I'm gonna cover it for her.. Wtf... What a horrible night...

I got a great introduction to poetry slams at Nuyorican, thanks to a truly sweet and poetic rateclubser. It was her first poetry slam at Nuyorican as well, so I suggested we each do something new together. I can honestly say that "your mileage may vary" since I was with someone who really enjoys it, thus my experience was great. The setting is very typical of what you would imagine a poetry bar would be. The tall walls are draped with artwork, encompassing a casual seating area that is dominated by this wide and intimidating stage. The bar isn't impressive at all, but I was so glad to see one there. Glancing over, it appears to be beer and wine only. You'll never know how shitty the performances might be, so as long as they're serving, you'll manage. Thankfully, the poets we saw were pretty inspiring and I walked away eager to go home and grow a soul patch. What I enjoyed most is the atmosphere. Everything is moderate to low energy, compared to the venues I normally attend. I can relax with a friend, drink cheap wine and be entertained without having to lose my voice or bruise myself. There is indeed a cover charge, but I believe it's only on nights when they host events. The staff is very cool and exceptionally sarcastic and witty. Don't take it personally! They're just poets and they're just fucking with you. I grew up with similar folk, so I felt right at home. My experience was great, but I'll only be back to when my new friend gets the courage to perform at a slam.
