Probably one of the only two sub-Saharan African restaurants in San Francisco with the other being it's sister restaurant down the street. Extending the city's global palate alone is a praiseworthy feat. The drinks use a lot of uncommon drink ingredients such as hibiscus further adding to the unique character of the place. The food gives a nice sampling into flavor combinations you don't find elsewhere. Plantano: The tamarind yogurt sauce made this dish with its tart, sweet and sour profile. The plantains could have stood to be cooked softer, but they were decent and the dip made them beyond good. N'Dole: This was totally worth the trip! Delicately tender lamb in a savory spinach peanut sauce. I'm relatively unfamiliar with African cuisine so don't know the exact spices, but the flavor combination is not comparable to any other lamb curry from any other area (India, Pakistan, Caribbean, Middle East, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand) I've had before. The couscous was a great carb choice since it absorbs the stew much better than rice and it is a nice change in this rice-centric town. Mango Melba: Disappointing. The mango bits were hard and not ripe enough. The ice cream wasn't nearly as good as the artisan shops in the neighborhood and the chocolate sauce tasted cheap.

Ah, Slide. The "secret" place beneath Ruby Skye, where, as rumours go, you can get by sliding down ... well, a slide. By the way, there are stairs too, for those ladies afraid to get their knickers in the twist. There's one huge problem with Slide. It has probably the toughest door policy in San Francisco, reckoning itself an exclusive, Vegas-style lounge. Unfortunately, once you are successful passing through the rather impolite bouncers (who, again, dream they are in Las Vegas), you are - well, somewhat disappointed in the quality of clientele. Perhaps because bouncers are obliged to let through everybody they (and the owners, and owner's relatives) know, and then any group of females numbering over 4, and also due to the general lack of beautiful people in San Francisco, all you see once inside is just your regular weekend night crowd. Here are your chubby girls, here are your frat boys, here are your velvet-clad hip-hoppers, and your Asian girls in black with their dorky, albeit rich boyfriends. The place is lacking in decor and gets too crowded for comfort. So - Vegas it is not. The idea of creating a Vegas-style bar in SF is flawed. This City is not Vegas, and thankfully, never will be. If you crave Vegas - hop on a Southwest flight and see the real thing. Otherwise - don't bother. This is a poorly made surrogate.
