Went here recently on account of a birthday; Carnival was chosen because they provided a comp'd guestlist for before-12 arrivals and a free bottle of champagne. On the way there, someone mentioned that Paris Hilton had something to do with the opening... kind of a bad omen, if you ask me. Walk up the stairs, and some fun-house mirrors and a revolving door will greet you. Inside, the 5th floor (or 6th? I lost count like everyone else) venue is spaaacious. Lots of room to accommodate the circus-tent ceiling, $4 carnival games, 2 pool tables, and tons of open space. The designers really did a pretty nice job of doing the place up, tho it was a little too sterile to do justice to a seedy carnival vibe. A big clown mouth forms the entrance to the side room, which serves as a dancefloor, judging by the loud music and yes, people dancing. I couldn't see where the DJ was, but it didn't matter. It was just an awful genre medly of the most overplayed pop tracks of the past few years. When we first entered the main room, there was some sort of fashion show going on. A weird thing. Busted models, H&M fashion, and cheap amateur photographers all kind of evoked something I might actually want to see. After the show was over, the main room was pretty awkward. There's so much space that you'd expect a dancefloor, except the music was real low and all you could do was just grab a drink and stand around. In fairness, it was not bad considering they didn't charge for entry. But it struck me as sort of a lot like Ms. Hilton, who I later found had hosted some opening party - plenty of style, and no substance.

The security outside the bar was extremely stringent. They actually checked under people's collars and confiscated Tylenol from purses. The screening frisk was so thorough that our hero felt violated. From the outside, it appears that they try to enforce a 2:1 or 3:1 girl:guy ratio at times, but once you get in it is fairly even. If you didn't come with such a high ratio, you better have gotten on the VIP list in advance with at least a 1:1 ratio. If you decide to just drop by, either come very early or prepare to bribe the bouncers even before they let you pay cover. Cover is $20, or $15 if you got your name on the list before. The lineup system outside was extremely confusing, with a VIP line, regular line, and a mass of people at the front trying to talk their way in. It is advisable to grab a booth early inside before they fill up and you're forced to stand with the chumps. Drinks are fairly standard for Hollywood, $9-$11 each. The male bartenders seemed nicer and more generous with their mixes than the female ones. Our intrepid hero was able to get tap water (with a slice of lemon!) instead of expensive bottled water, just by asking nicely. Tipping does go a long way here. The dance floor at Highlands is very expansive in the main room, and there are several other areas with different music to dance to as well. This is one place where you're not forced to grind butts or rub elbows with random strangers on the floor. You can take your choice of hip-hop, Top 40, or trance in various rooms. If you want to dance on the stage with a friend, pretend you work there or jump on when security isn't looking. The smoking patio has an excellent view and has a lot of room for all the people who need some nicotine during the night. PROS: - Really large club with several different choices of rooms/music - Lots of convenient places to sit or stand to take a breather from the dance floor - Bars available in every room - Hot go-go dancers CONS: - DJ in the main room liked to switch songs constantly, giving you only 1-2 minutes of your favorite song - Really strict security that seems to enjoy keeping you in line as long as possible - Not a lot of table service - Coat check is small relative to the size of the club and fills up too fast
