YES. This place is so weird and awesome. Everyone that I've taken there either hates it's seediness and general sketchy feel, or totally loves it for those exact reasons. The bartenders are totally rude, and it takes forever to actually get to sing your songs, but if you can get past that this place is totally entertaining. The walls are painted red with cheap plastic glow-in-the-dark stars stuck all over the place, and it's full of decrepit couches. Also, it seems some shady business goes on here. I've been told that L'Amour is a "hostess bar," where women work there chatting up men and getting them to buy them drinks. Ok fine, but this past weekend I took a group of friends there and we witnessed it go a little further. At one point one of my friends turned to me and said 'umm...look over there in the corner...?" and sure enough, one of the dudes I had seen at the bar a few minutes before with one of these ladies was getting a HAND JOB from her right out in the open, underneath a lamp in a corner, so everything was perfectly lit. This hj went on for over 20 minues and they didn't budge, even though we were all obviously gawking and cracking up. Not exactly the classiest joint in SF, but definitely one of the most unique. Every experience I've had there has been totally bizarre and amazing.

family and i stayed at the Renaissance Arboretum over the 4th of July weekend. i had decent expectations per the reviews and they were mostly met. the hotel lobby and atrium areas are quite lovely. not sure if there has been renovation above the second floor. our room was on the second floor and i immediately noticed it was a bit "dated" in decor. the bathroom wallpaper was not very current, and the vanity marble looked like it had seen better days. no flat screen tv for this room. also what's up with the limited channels in hotels anymore? the beds at marriott are always comfy and dressed nicely. no complaints there. requested a double queen room in our reservation and were initially given a room with a king. the bellman was super helpful by calling down and requesting a different room for us. does make me wonder if they pay attention to those requests in the reservation, as the hotel was not sold out, we should have been accommodated from the get go. we dined at the restaurant on friday evening. hubby and i both enjoyed the tortilla soup. it was quite tasty! the best part is the presentation. they bring your bowl to you with the servings of chicken, avocado, pico de gallo, grated cheese and tortilla strips inside the bowl, accompanied by a tureen of the actual soup base. thick, rich and flavorful goodness poured hot tableside! (7$bowl) the husband ordered the spiced salmon. two lovely thick filets served atop a bed of spinach(small bed), served with sauteed/grilled(?) mushrooms. the salmon was incredible. the seasoning used tastes moroccan in flavor. highly recommend!(19$) i also had the asparagus in brown butter(8$) cooked lovely, but the portion for the price was not worth. the AustinBytes cafe in the Atrium has some of the kindest workers there. i wish i would have gotten their names. a young man working on Saturday a.m. was more than helpful with accommodating "that one's" picky needs. went out of his way! he also made a fresh pot of coffee for me(without me asking) as he didn't know how long the coffee had been sitting before me ordering. very nice! we like this hotel because of the freeway access, but you do have to know where you are going to find the hotel itself. kinda hidden/nestled amongst the shopping area. not sure about the front desk, they all seem self absorbed from the outside looking in. not once did anyone extend service, unless they were approached. i know for sure that is not a marriott standard! in fairness i must report that i called housekeeping to request 2 extra washcloths and the front desk called me back 35 mins later to confirm my request had been accommodated, that was nice. we will stay there again when we need to be in this part of austin. the rate was 99.00 from the marriott website. oh and they are pet friendly(50$ nonref deposit) we didn't need this time, but certainly appreciate!

On a late, sweltering summer night out, a friend and I had finished the entire downtown circuit and the several friends we were with had all said their goodbyes and gone home. He and I were left with 1-2 hours before the bars closed and plenty of energy but nowhere left to go. We'd done everything from Roosevelt to Fate to the Lost Leaf. We weren't about to do Burn together cuz we're two guys and that would just be gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that. While talking outside, we heard music pumping in the distance and decided to follow it. We tracked it down to this nightclub that I didn't even know existed, even though I live within a 5-10 minute stroll of it. From the outside it looked interesting, at least in our drunken stupor. So we staggered in. There was a cover charge but the friendly but very scary looking bouncer let us in for free because it was so late. The club is essentially geared toward the Hispanic community. Not that there's anything wrong with that either. But as I explained to my bewildered out of town guest who was wondering if we'd just slipped into the Twilight Zone, this club as I saw it was a remnant of the "old school" downtown of yesteryear. Back in the day when yuppies (and hipsters and scenesters) ventured downtown only to watch a Dbacks or Suns game and then head straight back to their affluent suburbs. The young people left behind who didn't head to those suburbs were the original residents of the downtown area. And they headed here to finish off their Friday and Saturday nights. The interior of the place is massive. It was packed, with friendly folks. Not a single one of them was white, which to me is inconsequential but nonetheless interesting. There's a huge dance floor. The loud thumping music was basically Mexican nightclub stuff. I must say I was disappointed by the absence of even a single hottie, though. Which confuses me, since the place was packed and you'd think with the law of averages... ? Anyway, I guess this place would be fun to stumble into if you're in the exact same circumstances we were in. 1:15 at night, drunk, with an old buddy, out of options, and no need to worry about transportation home, I give it 3 stars because it was a randomly fun experience. But I wouldn't recommend *planning* on coming here as part of a Tour de Downtown on any weekend night.
