by Jennay G. on I came to Busby's on Saturday for a birthday party. I was confused as to what the venue was before I came, and am admittedly still a little bit confused. Everything taken into account ("everything" being what's listed below), I ended up having a solid night. I'll try to go chronologically... - Parking: we semi-used valet. We self-parked in the valet lot, and participated in some choice activities in the car as we were fashionably early. The valet dude was cool with it, we just handed him 5 bucks and he gave us a ticket. They were fine with us hanging out in the car as long as we kept the noise level down. Lots of food trucks in the valet area as well. - Entrance: it was close to 11 when we got in, so that means the homeboys had to pay 10 bucks. If I were made to pay, I would have had to take 1 star away. The line looked long but moved really fast. - Dress code: indecipherable. Lots of people were in what I would call "casual club attire." Girls would be fine in jeans and a cute top, though. Saw dudes in button-ups, saw dudes in t-shirts. Saw hipster dudes in girls' pants. - Crowd: it was apparent from the line outside that this place is ASIAN CENTRAL. No joke. To the point where if you saw someone not east-asian, you wonder how and why they were there. And I was overtly asked this question. Age-wise it's a young crowd. I'd say 21-25. - Bar: Lots of beer on tap, and decent priced mixed drinks for LA. My friends were paying 7 bucks for vodka tonics that did the trick-but their well vodka is some nasty shit in a plastic bottle that I would complain to see at a frat party with free booze. I opted for my standard cocktail of Jack & Coke for 9 bucks a pop. The bartender with long-ish hair was a cool dude and had some finesse to his drink-pouring. I was a fan. -Smoking area: small and gross. -Dance floor: I was enjoying visiting with friends in the bar area for so long that it took me until the end of the evening to find the dance floor. It was poppin! Music was lots of top 40, hip-hop, and typical club tracks. It was a HUGE room too, bigger dance floor than some clubs I've been to. -Game room: what game room? The night took me elsewhere, I didn't even know that it existed. Recap: decent night, if you know what you're in for. I went in with no expectations and ended up having fun, despite having to mediate a little bit of drama. If I had to make my own choice, there are dozens of places in LA that I'd rather make the drive for, but for the occasion it worked out nicely.
by Catrice Zaffalon on Half totally awesome antique boat to wander around in, half your-average-drinkers'-haven on a dock. If the weather is good, this is a really nice place to catch a drink with some friends. The views are beautiful all around, and there are so many little nooks and crannies on the boats that you can find a place to settle down with your worries and liquor. There were maybe three or four boats there that had tables and seating all around, and the whole place is generally quiet - the music is contained to certain areas. One of the boats is all rusty and definitely not sea-worthy, but a most fantastic spot for a bar. I went on a Saturday night and wondered why there weren't more people in the old boat. It was the highlight of the place if you ask me! But for some reason everyone was gathered on the dock (or main boat, hard to tell, everything was rocking!) The old boat had dozens of little rooms where you could escape to and an overall mysterious and cool ambiance. The bottom of the ship even has a dance room with a dj booth and a piano! Can be crowded on the other boats and main seating/bar area. Some tables on high-up places that required climbing steep stairs and/or ladders, resulting in spectacular views and intimacy at the same time. I heard the food was good, but didn't try it. Drinks were weak. Nevertheless, a decent place if you feel like taking a cab or bus all the way over there. What more can I say, pretty cool little place on the water!
by Russell Feltes on A few friends and I went here today to celebrate our birthdays. Three 40 something November babies. Me the youngest in the group. It is a very nice venue. We had a lot of fun. The food here is good, and the bowling nice, especially if you have the bumpers up, of which we did. I have problems with my legs and wrists because of Arthritis, so after bowling several gutter balls, they let me have the bumpers. Now the down side. This place is very over priced. It is about $10 per game per person. With $7 for a beer, $3 for a glass of soda and $7 for egg rolls, other items costing even more. Our food bill was $65 and our bowling and shoe rental $75 a total of $140 for the afternoon. But if you look at it as 3 friends out having a good time enjoying their birthday, this is priceless. So if you have the funds to spend, go, enjoy and have fun. The place was packed, so they must be doing something right. .
