by Anne C. on We went here for the Francis and the Lights concert. The show was great, but it started about 3 hours after the doors opened (with no opening act). The venue was passing out coupons to one of their weekend parties to "apologize" (meaning it must have been the venue's fault). The bottled beer was skunky, my boyfriend couldn't even finish his second one it was so awful. After ordering 3 drinks to meet the $20 minimum so I could close my tab before the show started, I was handed a receipt for $61. I quickly pointed out the error, only to have the bartender argue with me. He said my "friends must have been ordering drinks" on my tab - which is a crazy assertion since I had only been there about 30 minutes at this point, and I only knew 3 other people in the bar, none of whom had ordered anything on my tab. The bartender was accusatory and rude, obviously desperate to try and pin HIS mistake on me, the customer. After 15 minutes of arguing with him, he corrected his mistake, and recharged me the $20 I really owed, but I got home to find he never actually refunded me the original $61. So, in summation: I paid $80 for three drinks, missed the first 15 minutes of the show to argue with a bartender who clearly didn't know what he was doing or how to handle customers, and we didn't even enjoy all three of our drinks because the beers were so skunky. I'll never go back. This is Manhattan, there are plenty of places to go that can get it right. No reason to waste your time.
by Norene Defiglio on What this place lacked in flavor, it made up for in great environment and chill feeling. The last time I was in New York, I went to Bon Chon and while I loved the tasty fried chicken and hot waitresses (including the one who made a point of shaking her attractive derriere in my face), it was too crowded and dark. Those are things where Third Floor Cafe has a distinct advantage. First, let me say riding up in an elevator the size of an airplane bathroom is an entertaining experience. Then to find two burly bouncers is an even more amusing surprise. But once we were seated, service was attentive and quick. We had a 2500 cc beer fountain with fried chicken and the bulgogi. Like I said, the food wasn't so hot. What was amusing were the three girls at the bar waiting to pick up on unsuspecting males like myself. As my friend and I sat at a table nearby, he pointed out the girls and how they seemed really bored. There's a reason, I explained. They're just waiting for a guy to come along, then they'll get all animated. They probably know the staff here. A guy sits down next to them and all of a sudden like fembots near Austin Powers, they spring into action and start pouring shot after shot. Sadly for them, the guy's friends (boys and girls) come over and eventually the girls figure out they're going nowhere. After the patrons move away, the three girls disband and one of them goes behind the bar to pour herself a drink and hug the bartended. Shady Koreans... :-P I liked Third Floor. Not too pricey but a bit more than I would like to have spent.
by Laurene Glapion on A good place to start the night. I personally find the crowd pretty pedestrian, ditto for the music, but I do like the darkness downstairs as well as the upper level which has a bit more of a classier vibe. Place reminds me of the Pioneer Square clubs/bars in Seattle. THe main level which combines like 3 rooms together is like a college bar setting. People seem friendly here overall, not pretentious. I do like the solid bottled beer and mixed drink selection. The guest list before 11pm also bodes well for a first stop. Not overly impressed, but as long as this is the not the ultimate destination for a night I am cool with it.
