by Agueda Gumm on What can be said about Middlesex Lounge? First off, the people who named the place weren't that creative with their puns. And second, it's a good time for the kind of good time it is. Middlesex is the kind of place you can pass for innocent if you stop short of third base with your dance partner. It's the kind of place where it doesn't matter if you're ugly, 'cause it's dark, and the drinks flow freely. It's the kind of place where it's hard to tell if that couple who just came out of the filthy bathroom was having sex or doing drugs. In short, on the Meat Market scale, I give Middlesex a healthy 8/10. The dance music's a pretty average middle-of-the-road crowd pleaser. The clientelle is on the youngish side and on the international side, as with most dance spots. And the cover's only 5 bucks. So go to Middlesex, my children. Go to dance the night away, go to do shots, go to hook up with a random stranger. Just be sure to take a long hot shower afterwards. The Middlesex is technically nearer Central than Inman, but I'm including it on my Inman list since it is, just barely, within stumbling distance of my pad.
by Slyvia Schrauder on Monday Night's at Martuni's is like SF's Piano Bar version of Cheers. The same friendly faces arrive after 9pm to get a chance to sing to Joe's wonderful piano playing. Joe has books and books of Jazz, Broadway and Pop/Rock tunes and he can play almost any sheet music that others bring in. Only once have I heard him stop playing mid song and say, "I can't play this, this is crazy." The cocktails are also delicious. I highly recommend the Cherry Blossom and the Blueberry Lemondrop.
by Michael H. on Good music, great venue, but as others have said, both parking and dancing here have something in common: dealing with some very high people, especially as the clock approaches 4am...
