Webster Hall, what's the deal? I'll give you props for single-handedly keeping a huge staff of service industry employees in jobs...but really why does it take 6 separate people to check me into this club? And why does your coat check cost $4? And why does a PBR cost $5 at one bar, and but $3 at another? ...is that even legal? Why are you such a rabbit warren of staircases? Why do your vodka drinks pack absolutely no punch? Why would you not put the band I came to see on until after 1AM*? Why do I get the feeling you just have a bathroom attendant to discourage people from openly doing lines? And Webster Hall Clientele, what's your deal? I mean, everybody likes to party...I don't begrudge you that. But seriously, where did you people come from? It's like a middle school dance in here with anxious sex-segregated crowds clinging to the sides of the room, except that they're doing shots now... and texting. The air is filled with ozone and axe body spray with just a pinch of B.O for good measure. The downstairs "Studio" at least had decent music being spun, but seriously this club is just...Boring. And here's the biggest question of all: Why, oh why oh why would a dude EVER, EVER think it's OK to just walk up behind an unsuspecting lady and start grinding on her?! I mean seriously is this a scene from A Night At The Roxbury? UGH * Sheesh this makes me sound like such an old person, but seriously, that opening DJ didn't deserve an hour + set.

There's something about Jazz that chills me out. But I didn't begin to fully appreciation it until I heard it live for the first time. Now it's like I need to catch a show every so often or else I get a little irritable. Yoshi's is the spot when I need my fix. The venue at Yoshi's is a great place for both fans and first timers to experience some amazing performances, and they just have a way of drawing in some really big names. There is not a really bad seat in the house; although, the first row floor seats are super close to the stage. I've heard of up close and personal before, but this is ridiculous. The one time we sat there, I kept wondering if getting the balcony seats might be a better option. The one weird thing is the audience can have a profound effect on the show. Some artists are super swayed more by the energy of the room than others, but it does happen. So here's what happened: The first show was packed. It was unfortunate the crowd was blah and wasn't into it. Things got so bad that a table behind us tried to talk over the current song. It was like they were saying, "does the guy on stage have to be so loud when we're trying to have a conversation here?" Unreal. It was still a good show but there was no heart to it. We got to stay for the second show since it wasn't a full house, but there was a different feel in the air. There were a lot more fans and it really showed: longer applause, heartier laughs at jokes, and more oohhs and aahhs. This time the performer really opened up and was totally engaging. Good times. Overall, I can't begin to tell you how happy I am Yoshi's has a location in the City. It's presence in the Filmore brings a welcome sound to a changing part of town. It also saves me from having to drive out to Jack London Square.
