Gotta start somewhere with my first rateclubs review. I'm reviewing Playhouse as a venue, but based on my experience at the Monday Social. You should also know that I love music deeply, and that in my soul I'm a house head. I love house music. House music, for me, is also about people being themselves, around a diverse mix of other people being themselves, and feeling some sense of equality and togetherness in that. No matter who you are or how much you make. That can't happen in any space with 95% of seating for VIP bottle service, a skimpy sound system, and a small dance floor. I don't want the worst things about a Vegas club on a Monday night in my own town. You'll find heads here making the most of that dance floor. And you'll also find VIPs who are heads. I just don't like any place that segregates the two this much, purely for the sake of cash or some kind of coolness, and where sound, vibe and general openness and comfort suffer as a result. My two cents.

Absolutely one of my favorite venues in San Francisco. Since I've become a grumpy old man, imbibing alcoholic beverages in mass quantities has lead to...well I don't want to say incontinence...but apparently my bladder has shrunk to the size of a squirrel's. So when I go and see a live show in the City, I don't have the patience, will, or bladder volume to fight my way up to the front row of the pit, and out and back again when I need to take a leak. My solution is to walk upstairs and pull up a seat on the balcony, where I can drink in peace, get easy access to the bar (and pisser), where I don't have to stand up for 3 hours straight, or fight little punk ass indie kids for a view of the stage. Seriously, the balcony is probably the best seat in the house. Ted Leo rocked this fookin' house. And the Dears brought their sweet Canadian melancholy here. Elvis Costello played a show here that I missed, but by God, the next time he plays this joint, I will be here for sure.

Thanks to Keith M for telling me about this place! Went to brunch on Sunday and it wasn't busy (I went around 10:30-11AM). Had the eggs florentine, it was delicious! The decor is nice, nothing too fancy, very comfortable and hip. The service was great, no complaints about this place. Parking is street, but if you go early on Sunday, the parking is plentiful in the area. Also, meters are still free on Sunday here.
