I am a little behind on this review. I went on Valentine's Day with a friend after having seen "In Bruges". And while this review isn't about the movie, if you have a love of dark comedy, check it out. My cheeks hurt from laughing so hard. It was GREAT!! So, we ended up here at Yoshi's after sitting in the lounge area at 1300 hoping we might get squeezed into someone's dropped reservation. No luck of course since it was Valentine's Day. So, we walk down a few doors and here we are at Yoshi's. I'm pretty famished at this point so you could have fed me a Big Mac and I would have been happy. When we were first greeted by the host I was slightly affronted by the incoherent greeting that was mumbled. I then transitioned to being slightly annoyed when the waitress came to the table and uttered an indiscernible greeting as well. My head is saying... "WTF did they say? Oh never mind, you're having fun and the menu looks pretty damn interesting, so shut up, read and keep having fun". Big space - too big and definitely not an intimate sort of vibe at all. The menu is ... all over the place. Sushi, tapas style plates, Japanese entrees. Wow...confusion set in. We ordered a couple plates, one of which was duck and the other I believe was scallops. While they were both extremely tasty and the presentation was great, they were very small. Remember, I was down for Big Mac just minutes before. The last slight annoyance was when we looked at the dessert menu and all the good stuff was on the special valentine dessert plate. It consisted of 3 different items .. enough for 2 at the cost of 20 bucks. We asked if we could just get one of the items. They wouldn't split it that way until my friend offered to just pay for the whole damn thing and have them put only the chocolate mousse cake on the plate and leave the other 2 items off. Of course they charged full price. It was very creamy and oh so perfectly chocolate. II am probably just a whore for chocolate if we are going to get real about it. The cool factor of the evening was when we asked another waitress (I believe she was Japanese) what the hell they were mumbling in the beginning. 'Irashaimase' she told us and offered to write it down. The cool factor was substantially diminished when the honky waitress (I am a honky too) came back with 'Irashaimase' written on a piece of paper (probably written by the Japanese waitress). Somehow the white chick just spoiled it. It lost all of its magic. Oh well, at least we found out what the hell everyone else was muttering at us. I would like to suggest that they get on board with being sincere and understandable with the greeting, since it is after all a customary greeting and is intended to be polite. I didn't find anything polite about it until the Japanese girl got involved. All in all it was one hell of fun night with decent food and great company. What more could you ask for? I would definitely go again and when I do I will pay closer attention and update my review to be more specific about the food.
