I've been to this place several times in late afternoon but before Happy Hour.  I've always sat at the bar. I've experienced three bartenders and they have all been friendly and competent. The beer selection is outstanding.  Lots of interesting microbrews. I've tried appetizers a time or two and they have been just fine. I love the atmosphere!  It's a very cool space with lots of quirky décor.  Also, the location is very convenient for Old City. For me National Mechanics is an easy place to like!

I'd been to Rumor at the beginning of this year and didn't particularly like it. The crowd wasn't that great, and neither was a I fan of the music playing that night. I didn't quite pay attention to the look and feel of the place because the other two were just so overwhelming for me. But I decided to go again at a friend's nudging on a Thursday night. And I'm happy to say I'm glad I went! We got there fairly early - around 11 and because we were on the vip list (something that anybody can get on - just go on their website and sign up) one person was free and the other was 'reduced admission' at 15. The place was pretty empty at that point. In fact we were one of the first ones. We started having our drinks and having a good conversation and half an hour to 45 minutes later we turn around and the entire place is full! Let me start with the look and feel. The place has 2 sides. One is the bigger side which usually plays house/hip hop depending on the night, and the other plays hip hop/latin, once again depending on the night. Downstairs is the coat check ($4) and the bathroom - not exactly placed well when everybody at the end of the night is trying to get their coats and using the bathrooms - but can't do much about that! Going upstairs, there are two bars in the main room. The tables r in the middle of the room and around the corner as you go more inside. The dance floor can be slightly bigger. The drinks are on the pricier side - a regular drink is around 12 bux, but considering this is a nicer place, it's understandable. The music was the MAIN highlight. I'm in love with House music and the DJ spinning that night was primarily spinning in that genre and spinning great songs at that. So i thoroughly enjoyed my time. The place got incredibly packed by 12 30 and it was just difficult to move around without really pushing into people - not something that i like, but hey gotta do what you gotta do! Finally, the place had a good crowd this night so it surpassed my low expectations I had from my previous experience. All in all, i really did like the place. But word to the wise, get there early, get on the list, so you don't have to wait (or pay that much) in the cold! Because really you will as it gets closer to 12. The place just gets incredibly packed and the bouncers just aren't nice and will make you wait no matter what. Just go early!

The only real Trudy's location is this one, tucked in the triangle between 30th, Fruth and....uh...the hypotenuse. This is a fine party place. Great waitstaff, a great outside deck, a neato bar area with pop art downstairs. Enough has been said about the Mexican Martinis. We usually get them. They rock. The last time I went I ordered the Caipirinha, the new national drink of Brazil. Firstly, everyone calls them "capri-hana". That annoys me. And I really wanted to be annoyed at the waiter who just couldn't at all describe to me what it was without Gunga-Dinning back to the bar to ask...and then STILL not being able to explain it. But I couldn't because he was just so bubbly and new and just plain..... nice! So now I'm the D-head. And then out comes the chips and salsa. Bad timing. Nothing speaks "Chicago" more than Trudy's chips and salsa. Thick and tasteless but tall on the heat. By now, my capri-hyena is finished and I'm tearing into some Tortilla soup. I'm feeling a bit better. But the fact is, I never really look forward to EATING at Trudy's. Their Migas are enjoyable, and in fact their Migas Taco may be one of the best breakfast deals in town. Ask for an extra tortilla to improve the odds of one of them being soft. Their cheese mashed potatoes are tasty, but the rest of the menu I have tried is usually a heavy and forgettable supporting act to the overall experience of partying on north campus with your friends. Just get your first drink down quickly and all will be swell.
