The Republican blew me away. Think smoke filled 70's after hour dive bar with blue lights where they have an old skool jukebox that has The Traveling Wilburys on it. Oh, and they also have a lone stripper pole on a tiny unlit stage in the middle of the room. A couple of strippers take turns at dancing to Fugazi, The Misfits, and The Butthole Surfers, Snoop Dogg, etc... The Republican has the same crowd that you would expect to find at Ray's Happy Birthday Bar or Bob and Barbaras. There were some hipsters, creepy guys who have been drinking since 7 pm who like to babble incoherently about nothing to anyone who will listen, and blue collar South Phillyites. Everyone just kind of stands around and talks while occasionally watching the strippers and singing along to the songs. It's a fun time especially after you've already been drinking all night long. I noticed that a lot of people weren't really tipping the dancers which is sort of a bummer. I recommend that you tip because these ladies can dance pretty well for being on such a small stage. I was really impressed with the strippers' agility! One of the highlights of the night was when my friend and I put dollars in our mouths and the dancer pressed her breasts together took the dollars with them! We got faces full of boob! The Republican is open until at least 4 because my friends and I left at a quarter to 4. If you're staying up for the long haul go to Melrose diner down the street! After some T&A, a few cups of coffee, and some corned beef hash, I got home at 6 and slept maybe two hours. I don't regret a thing!
