I'm always humbled and grateful to learn -- well into my adulthood -- about a slice of "history" that I'd never before known. Bring on Fela!. And welcome to Lagos... From the vibrant and clubby first half, through the trippy, other-worldly latter half, the show is both stunning and enlightening. The sheer energy of the performance is mesmerizing. At the same time, the details, from costumes to scenery to language, are extraordinary. "I refuse to live my life in fear," said Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Would that we all embrace this, in sentiment and in action -- and expect no less from our leaders, whomever we choose them to be.

I was telling a friend who came to town that we should go to Blakes and he said "Oh, you mean the double wide?" HAHA I guess he didn't have a great impression from entering the bar from the upper back side. It does look much like a double wide. Well, this IS the South. =) The plastic dixie-cup sized drinks are deceiving because they pack a punch -- a little dab 'll do ya. And the drag show can be fun IF you get a decent spot to stand, since they pretty much just clear the floor by the main door and the queens prance away. When its busy there's not much elbow room, but at least the scenery is decent. =)

I really like Rain a lot. My husband and I eat there all the time on the way to movies at the Tara. They have done an amazing job with the decor. I had never been in that space prior to Rain but I get the impression that they took a tired, out of date space and made it into something really cool. The food is very good. I especially recommend the Rain forest Crunch Roll. It's amazing and it comes with this little extra thing of four pieces of Salmon wrapped around something (I think it's just cream cheese) with something crunchy on it. It is amazing! (how's that for being nonspecific?) The edamame is really great too, crisp, warm, salty, delicious! If I had to pick I think I would choose the Japanese side of the menu over the Thai side but that's just me. My husband likes the Thai side. One of my very favorite things about Rain is their cocktails. These people can mix a cocktail! They come out all cold and delicious with tiny slivers of ice floating in them and they have just the right balance of alcohol and mixers. Plus, as of the last time I was there, you can order a small cocktail for $5. It's not huge but it's plenty for one drink. I think it is a fantastic deal. I almost always go on Friday night and the same lady seems to be running the show. I don't know if she is a manager or owner but she seems very intent on keeping things running smoothly. Let's just say I would want to be the one who dropped the ball if I were one of her employees. I highly recommend this place. Enjoy!
