I came here on an unplanned trip a week ago. We basically just walked around and said, "hey, we never tried this place before." Funny thing is I've always heard of this from place from people going on dates and watching performances. Seeing Brian McKnight on the calendar was a blast from the past. Then I thought...Was it a good thing for his career that he was performing here? As its title says, this place is definitely a "Jazz Club" first and then a "Japanese Restaurant" second. Next time, if I see someone on the schedule that I would like to see perform, I would definitely buy some tickets. As far as just going their to eat...I'll have to pass. We started off our meal with a sashimi platter appetizer and kobe beef sushi. The kobe beef sushi was the best thing I ate that night. It's made of Japanese eggplant, spinach, and topped with a slice of grilled tri-tip. Of the "shared entree" section, we only got the swordfish, but we basically ordered what seemed to be every roll in their "roll" section. Each roll we ordered weren't really special and nothing really stood out, but they were presented well and were pretty good. The swordfish like the rolls was tasty, but fell short to my expectations. When I'm talking about expectations, I'm talking about price tag compared quality of their product. Everything just seemed a bit pricey for something that seemed ordinary. What did I learn from my visit? The service was good, food could be better, learned what "coursed" meant, found out some tea leaves and boiled water could be charged at six bucks a pop, and found a nice place to watch a jazz performance.

Great crowd, good sound system, quick service at the bar, and no Hollywood douches :) (i.e. that's you if you're looking for "swanky")

Love it! Great music, great crowd, great dancing and great drinks. It loses a point for the DJ with the terrible transitions, but other than that, it was fantastic. The place is a small restaurant by day, but they clear out all the tables and chairs to make room for dancing by night. I can't wait to come back and try the food one of these days. Note that they close the kitchen around 9:15 pm. It is a super small space, and around midnight, it got way too crowded for my taste, but from about 10-12, the music and dancing were fantastic. I'd never heard about 95% of the songs, but they were all good for dancing. There were several people in the crowd who were exceptionally talented dancers and fun to watch. Definitely not your normal SF club environment - it's pretty casual, and I doubt there's any dress code. If there is, dreadlocks probably help you get around it!
