i too attended the aforementioned work event, and let me just say that in addition to being crowded, oversold, poorly planned, and generally unpleasant, the event was also crawling with reptiles.  the academy cafe's food line, in the center atrium, was staffed by a small team of lizards.  by lizard, i mean they stare at you intently with blank, hungry eyes, while you ask them for food, or beer, or water, or anything.  they just wait for you to hold still enough so that they can spit acid in your face.  like a dilophosaur. they don't have to give you anything if they don't feel like it; you could literally wait in line for fifteen minutes and then when it comes your turn they go "line's closed."  they made the announcement not ten minutes ago.  hey, it's your own damn fault.  they stop serving food at the exact time they said they're going to stop, regardless of whether you were already in line. also, all the tickets for everything were sold out.  the entire night was people telling us we couldn't do stuff.  we spent the entire time in the crowded aquarium downstairs, and got the hell out of there. for such an expensive museum, you'd think they'd spend a little effort hiring staff who actually gave a crap.

The prices were not superb, but I met Phillip Seymour Hoffman here.  That deserves four stars.  I wouldn't go to this joint on a weekend.

I dedicate my 300th rateclub review to good friends and good times - Medjool just happened to be the spot where that all went down.  Get ready for a long review, skim if you want.  It's a dedication, y'all. It all started when my friends and I scored a really sweet parking spot around the corner.  I had already scoped the block a few times and was ready to settle for a parking lot.  Sweet karma. Then, we got a round of drinks - the pomegranate mojito, I think, was the special of the night.  I was the DD of the night so I stayed dry, but the sip I had was delish. We got seated at a table for 8, with room for other friends to join us later.  Since our reservation was at 9, I think most of us came prepared without completely empty stomachs but we still attacked the menu and food with a vengeance.  My picks were pommes frites and scallops - both were big hits.  We also got bacalao, the Medjool sampler, halibut,...  Can't remember it all. Some dishes were great, and others were fantastic.  I have to say that the desserts were hit or miss.  The ginger cake tasted like a slice of ginger bread from a health store.  The chocolate cake was much better - I like my desserts to taste sinful...  C'mon now - it's the every now and then splurge, right?  Otherwise, why AM I running like a mad woman on that treadmill? Okay.  So back to the company...  A couple of friends visiting up from So Cal mixed in with local friends.  And, I invited a somewhat persistent ratecluber who's always reminding me to introduce him to my single female friends (holla at him people!) - Fly A.  I had not yet met him in person even though we've traded a bunch of PMs and compliments.  Turns out he's just as mad cool in person as he is on rateclub.  But some of you already knew that. The night ended with Medjool turning into a nightclub of sorts.  This is where Fly A. gave me the raised eyebrow for picking Medjool on a Friday night...  I swear, my friend Jess picked the place!  I was only along for the ride!! Anyway, I said "nightclub of sorts" because the music was a bit faded - this is not a compliment people - and on a scale of 10, probably started at a 3 and rose to a 6 (depending on the music played).  I had been to Medjool one other time but had an early dinner and never ventured up to the second floor or rooftop.  Well, this time, we did both.  I'm not much of a party animal anymore, in fact, I'm a self-proclaimed granny.  Seriously.  But for those party types, who get decked out in clubby wear, maybe you'd like it?  I dunno...  Personally, I was back at my apartment some time after midnight.  And I had a good night. Thanks to rateclub for giving me the space to share my thoughts.  Thanks to my fans and readers for encouraging me to write more.  It's been a helluva run, and here's to another 300!
