I've been here twice. Once with a promoter on a Tuesday night, once for a private event for NYC law students (I got in with my BF). I have to say that I'm not much of a fancy-lounge type person, so I had not gotten wind of Marque's reputation before going. We got to the club super early....as in ten minutes before they opened, and we were ushered right in as soon as 11pm rolled around. Perhaps if I had been trying to get in later in the evening I would have experienced some of the velvet rope trauma that seems to characterize most peoples' experiences. I had a faaaaabulous time with the promoter, at a table with bottle service. The DJ was great, and I had a great time dancing and drinking surrounded by....better-than-average-but-not-amazing people. The private event I attended kind of sucked. Music sucked, drinks sucked (but were discounted for the event), decorations sucked. They just really phoned it in. I suppose they probably feel indignant at the thought of hosting a party for petty little law students. They won't be happy until they grow into rich lawyers that come back to pay their insane cover charges and drink prices. So it's a great club on weeknights...if you don't have to pay. If I did have to pay, I think I would have to bump it down to two stars.

I had been planning on going here for weeks. All of my international friends had always said it was the place to be on a Thursday night--primarily for the salsa. So being a big fan of salsa, I finally gave it a try. However my friends never mentioned you need to know someone with a VIP table to actually get into the salsa room. And of course that night happened to be the only night they didn't know anyone in VIP. So after paying a $20 cover, we never got into the salsa room. That left us in the giant dance hall room where they played about 10 minutes of hip hop, and the rest unappealing trance. Not feeling the scene too much, I hit the bar with my friend, paid a ridiculous amount of money for a beer, and then proceeded to lose my brand new cell phone. Luckily someone found it and I got it the next day but overall I can't say I was such a fan of the place. However if you're trance/techno music and you have a lot to spend, this is probably your place to be.
