by Stephan N. on This review is for the nightclub... I came really early so I was able to get in for free after signing up on their guestlist the night before. A diverse crowd with good music, Roe was a nice place to be on a Saturday night! I heard people walking in later complaining about how they held up the line so if you plan on going and don't want to pay cover, do come before 10p to get in before 11p. It was still empty inside while they were holding up the line... =( By around 11:45p the place was packed. If you like a club with a diverse crowd and good music, Roe is not a bad place to be at!
by Dawne Schloemer on I've been going to this place for years, even before it was moved 3 blocks up! It's a flatbed boat that is anchored to the dock on 26th and the Hudson River. There is no cover and and you can be sure to spend a beautiful spring/summer/autumn night out watching the beautiful sunset. It's a vast space with an upstairs deck as well. Food and beverages are available. Events are held almost all summer. If you are not boat friendly, take some Dramamine, but it sways so gently that you won't even notice. Mixed crowd and just a great venue in general.
by Natalie Peshek on After looking at the other reviews and polling my friends - it seems that Opera has a love/hate relationship with its patrons. It seems that I am the only one who will offer a balanced and cautious opinion. These days I feel I am outgrowing the giant club scene. Irish bars and dives with tiny dance floors are more my thing. I know too many bartenders in this town to wait for a drink, and when it comes to eye candy its all about quality not quantity. However, Opera has gained a national reputation for hosting solid well known DJs and a great crowd to cheer them on, so a friend convinced me to go. After arriving before 11p one Saturday, I saw what all the fuss is about. The place is beautiful, and huge. But everything is VIP areas once you start looking up. The drinks aren't cheap, but if you are nice to the bartender, they are plenty strong. Some of the patrons (men and women) are boorish (in good ways and bad), but if you are clear about what is and is not acceptable - you will survive. And the music is great, with lots of cool DJs who do great work on the 1s and 2s. But here's the rub. If you want to have a good time, do these things. 1) Sign up on guest list at the website, get there early, save money. 2) Seriously, dress the part. Opera is one of the few places in town where it makes a difference. 3) Pay for VIP. It's the only way you can really explore the venue, and if you get there early it's cheap too. 4) Be friendly, this place ain't Applebee's. From bouncers to bartenders to DJs, these folks don't think of themselves as part of the service industry. They are doing a job at night and want to have some fun like everybody else at the same time. If you are helping their cause, they will help yours. 5) Don't come not expecting to have a good time. Everyone is feeling for and feeding off a vibe at Opera. If you have a bad one, you aren't gonna have a good night. I like Opera, but for me it is not a place I hit right after work or without some prep time.
