tahCha Tea House is a mix between Teavana, your local library and Starbucks. It is located in a hole-in-the-wall, nondescript strip mall with the Velvet Room nightclub, a McDonald's, and a Big Lots, right off I-285. Very easy to get to, but you will miss it if you aren't paying attention. The exterior has outdoor seating but as there is nothing special to look at, I probably wouldn't sit outside. The interior is very warm and inviting--nicely decorated in earthtones and a clear contrast to the exterior. There are several different seating arrangements, including two configurations with sofas and one with floor pillows. Most of the rest of the seating is at tables, with two tables being able to accommodate larger parties of more than four people. A counter/bar service area is at the back next to the cash register. It even has a children's play area, complete with games like Uno and Scrabble. The women's bathroom was clean but smelly; it is designed for use by one person at a time and did having a diaper-changing station. I visited on Thursday, 4/8/10 around 1:30 pm. There was no crowd, yet it took the two people at the service counter five minutes to even acknowledge that I was standing there (I was about to leave when finally I was noticed). There is no portable menu of the teas to look at while you wait to be served, so you either have to know what you want before getting to the front of the line, or take up the server's time in asking lots of questions. Being new to this establishment and having only been to Teavana at Phipps Plaza once, I let the server know this so she could guide me to a tea selection. She invited me to sniff the samples on the counter and asked what kinds of teas I liked. Since I do enjoy rooibos, she offered up the tea of the day which was a rooibos blend. I ordered it unsweetened, and it was very tasty and served well-brewed (not bitter) at tableside. I received a full serving plus a carafe that held about another 1.5 servings. The atmosphere of this tea house is cool. You could easily work on your laptop (as two people did), sit at a table and talk (as two other people did), or be quiet and read (as I did). The music was jazz-like and very mellow, and not played too loudly so that it didn't drown out your conversation (as I heard every word of the couple two tables over). This seems like a good place for regulars to come, those who could get to know the staff on more than a first-name basis. You will, however, have to be patient with service as there was only one person to help behind the counter at this time of day. Pricing is on par with Starbucks for the beverages. My tea was $3.41. After I finished my brewed beverage I went back to the counter to purchase loose tea to brew at home. I neglected to ask and the server failed to indicate the brewing instructions. I posted this comment on the Facebook fan page and am awaiting a response. The establishment also sells paninis, wraps and desserts. Sandwiches were between $5.99-$6.99 and the desserts were between $0.75-$2.50. I only got the Roasted Carob Coconut Drop in Peppermint Crème as this was the only vegan item on the menu. There was a veggie wrap but I didn't want to take a chance with cross-contamination with meat. Overall I liked this place and plan to go back as often as I'm in the area and fancy a good cup of tea. I would recommend it to others, especially those who want to support local business owners and not go the corporate, Teavana route.

Our first dinning experience and food deserve four solid stars, but the Jon B. show on Thursday night was another story which I'll get to later. We started with cocktails: Ruby, My Dear (Finlandia Grapefruit Vodka Fresh grapefruit, Elderflower, salt rim, served up) and Limon (Don Julio, fresh lemon & lime juice with agave nectar). Both drinks were tasty and strong, but the Ruby, Mr Dear was my fave. We ate family style and first decided on the Tenpura Lobster Blossoms (4pc lobster, shrimp, scallops, shiitake and soy bonito dipping sauce) as our appetizer. These little pouches of lobster heaven were amazing, and I could have easily eaten all four pieces on my own. Sometimes sharing really sucks! Then came our Poached Main Lobster Salad (butter lettuce, avocado, yuzu-ginger dressing), which was also amazing and delicious. We were truly surprised by the generous size of the lump lobster meat throughout the salad. Again, would have preferred not to share! We also had the "Hari-Hari" Salad (organic baby spinach, mustard leaf, Kobe style tri-tip, balsamic soy dressing), which was better at the Yoshi's in Oakland. But again, the two Lobster dishes stole the show so the Hari-Hari stood no chance. Next came our Kobe Beef "Sushi" (4pc lightly grilled tri-tip, Japanese eggplant, Bloomsdale spinach, sweet miso sauce) and the Spicy Dragon (shrimp tenpura, avocado, spicy aioli). The Kobe Beef was tender and was serve on a square of eggplant. The Spicy Dragon roll was not spicy. We exed the unagi, and Yoshi's exed our spicy aioli, so this roll was nothing special. For dessert we decided on the Trio of Housemade Ice Creams (coco, maccha, crème fraîche with toasted rice), which we could have gone without. Service was attentive with a classic romantic ambiance. The parking garage across the street made parking a breeze, and was only $6 for several hours. Although, despite notifying the maitre d' that our reservation was made using Open Table, he decided to list us as a no-show. ~1 star performance~ Now, onto the "show." This was also our first SF Yoshi's show, and possibly our last. We saw that Jon B. was coming to Yoshi's for one show on one night only and decided to check him out, since he has quite a few songs we love. We were unpleasantly surprised when Jon B. took stage with an electric keyboard/guitar and announced that 1. he was buzzed, 2. that there was no planned show, and 3. stated that he was used to playing with a band, but tonight it would only be himself, a CD, his electric keyboard/guitar, and Yoshi's grand piano. I can now say that I have seen it all, because this was the first time (and hopefully only) that I have witnessed an artist attempt to sing along with a jumble of songs mixed onto a CD. Jon B still has a lovely voice, and potential, but this show was bizarre. We initially thought Ashton Kutcher was going to jump out and tell us we were all being punked, but that never happened. After an hour and 15 tortuous mins., and another failed solo with his electric keyboard/guitar, our ears could no longer take it, so we decided it was time to flee. Although I have to say that some other patrons truly enjoyed themselves and proved their unconditional love and support for Jon B., but that wasn't the case for us. Baby, are you still down? Uh, no!
