by Barbara K. on Last Friday, I went to Top of The Standard for the first time. I love lounges with spectacular views of the city and even New Jersey. We were seated in the back next to the fire place. Standing next to fire on a cold winter night and having cocktails is wonderful. Now, the service, the hostess at the door, very polite. Our server very polite, a little slow but very friendly. Bartenders, snobby. For an overpriced extra dry martini, I would really like you to serve me with a big smile and ask me how my drink is. Not to look at me and say I'm busy with someone else. If you looking for a great view, warm fire and to show off how much money you are willing to pay for a drink, Top Of The Standard is the place.
by Autumn K. on Due to work and higher end social obligations of late, the wagon I'm draggin' ain't been shook in quite a while. At least not to hip hop and late-90s rap. I love love love to get stupid sloppy and dance around like a freak fool white girl while making kissy-faces at boys under 24 and shaking what my mama gave me til last call, never caring how incredibly, painfully awkward and ridiculous I probably look. Vertigo is a great place to do all of the above without worrying that you'll run into anyone you are actively seeking to impress. See, this is clearly where all the 24-28 year old Berkeley fraternity leftovers (complete with striped polo shirts and beer bellies) can be found on weekend nights. Notice Vertigo still gets 5 stars from me. Why? Because I could care less about the crowd when my posse's rolling 30-deep. Bring your most insular, cliquey group of friends, make a tiny corner of this tiny spot yours, and enjoy the music and cheap booze, especially on Friday nights when the very hot Clinton K is spinning. Oh, and tell them Samantha sent you!
