Residing in a former bank built in 1837, National Mechanics blends in perfectly with the look and feel of Olde City. After spending the earlier part of our night pub-crawling at sea level, we stumbled up the steps of this beautiful work of architecture and I was nearly convinced I'd be seeing neon and strobe lights begin to pour out the front door, hearing house music pound the foundation. If this were a building in New York, my prediction at this point would be dead-on. Instead, I was more than pleasantly surprised to walk inside and see a bar - not some club, not some dance hall, not some over-priced lounge, but a bar. Almost immediately, I knew we'd be here the rest of the night. There was this great party atmosphere, stripped of all pretension - the kind of setting that feels like the worst type of peer pressure - you know, the type where you're actually welcoming the pressure and not just succumbing to it? Anyway, National Mechanics is very dark, which, in my opinion, is the only way a bar should be. The music was a little hit or miss, but when the drinks are drank, the drunks will still dance, right? There were times the DJ had everyone moving, then by the next song, he'd lost me. No worries - the lapse in momentum was simply the cue to get another adult beverage. The mixed drinks were around $7, nearly half alcohol, and served right until the stroke of 2AM - the bartenders were on top of their game, for sure. This is my brand of bar - deceivingly gorgeous on the outside, and a devil of a good time on the inside. If I lived in Philly, National Mechanics would be my go-to spot in the neighborhood. Next time I'm in town, you know where to find me.

Just waited an hour and didn't even get seated. Took our business elsewhere. We were always next on the list. Horrible. Incompetent.
