I was lucky enough to take a gastronomic tour of Austin's BBQ and Tex-mex last weekend. One of the essential stops on the tour is going to be the Salt Lick. Infamous in Austin and worthy of such. Sitting next to us, by the way, was none other that Earl Campbell himself! I was pretty sure I was in Texas at this point. We went with the family style plate which basically means you can get as much of everything as you want. The trick here is when you're ready to explode, order another plate and take it home. The ribs were the star of the show - they were not fall off the bone (they shouldn't be), but they were tender and juicy and seasoned just right with no need for sauce. The brisket, chicken and sausage were good but not fall-out-of-yer-saddle good. Prices have gone way up since the place was featured on the food network, so don't expect a good deal. Definitely a place you need to experience in Austin... oh, and bring some good beer that will stand up to all that bbq. I can't believe how much bud light I saw there, ugggh.

I visited Cover 3 to watch Sunday football with some friends last week on the recommendation that it was less crowded and had better food than other options we were considering. The recommendation was definitely accurate on both accounts. My friend and I were interested in getting a good table so that we could watch my Niners play his Colts. The only other requirement was that we needed to be seated where the Cowboys game was also in view given that other friend is a (*sigh*) Dallas fan. So to be safe, we showed up a half hour before kickoff - totally unnecessary. They had plenty of seating and the hostess referred to a printed sheet to find the best place in the large restaurant to see both games. As for the food, I got the chophouse burger with the parmesan fries since I'd heard a lot of great things about it. At $9 it better be as good as advertised - and it actually was. The fries were amazing really. The only problem with the experience was the outcome of my game - but it's hard to fault Cover 3 for that. This is easily the best place that I've found to watch football in this part of town. Austin's come a long way since the times when Legends (sports bar in Holiday Inn) was the only option.

Small. Music was cool. Drinks needs to go out faster. People were typical people that went there before it was icon, they just got older. hahaha!!
