by Xtine H. on I had wanted to try this place as soon as I had heard it even existed, you see as a teenager, I used to go dancing there on Friday nights. The space is interestingly decorated (with skeletons of animals placed on high shelves, and lighting oddities, and many a terrarium), I thought the location was a great stop while attending First Friday at the galleries in Olde City. The menu is pretty standard for this type of place- wings, burgers, nachos, calamari, fish and chips, hummus, that type of thing, but there is an addition of a few different varieties of shrimp, a selection of sandwiches, and steak. The most interesting items on the menu are from the "nostalgics" which include Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese (who doesn't love that) Corn Dogs (!!! At a restaurant ?!) and something they call Frito Taco Extravaganza-which the menu states is a bag of Frito's opened up and topped with chili and shredded cheese. They also have more substantial dinner fare, but I caught them during their special-all burgers (veggie and meat) along with fries are $5 from 5-7 pm Tuesday-Sunday (they are closed Monday) Id have to say they have THE BEST veggie burgers I have ever had! Shredded vegetables make up the patty, even the roll is yum. PLUS they have cider on the menu and a large selection of beer (seasonal and otherwise), friendly staff. In October be sure to try their pumpkin soup, one of the best I have ever had... Definitely do not skip it if you find yourself in the Olde City area looking for a meal!
by Rhoda Hechinger on My roommate and I were here last night for Royale's grand opening, expecting the best. We were severely disappointed. The club itself is beautiful and big with lots of bars, places to sit and a balcony to survey the crowd. The bartenders and waitstaff were smokin, and the dancers positioned on pedestals and lounging on thrones on the stage were good eye candy too. But the whole experience was ruined by the VIP lounge that takes up a significant portion of the bottom floor, the logical place where a dance floor would be. Because the lounge breaks up the floor, there was no real dance floor. People tried to make the best of the situation by dancing in the space between the VIP lounge and the main bar, but it just wasn't working. There were a couple opening-night glitches that probably can't be held against the club: credit card machines on the fritz at multiple bars, at least one totally incompetent bartender, and a total lack of any type of MC'ing or introduction of the playboy bunnies and "special guests" that were advertised (who knows if they were even there). Hopefully with time these issues will be ironed out (especially the bar situation. . .waiting for 20 minutes to order a drink is ridiculous. . .no matter how busy a club is). But until the VIP lounge is moved to allow for a proper dance floor, I definitely won't be going back.
